UN entity rejects Tata Chemicals project proposal

A United Nations body working on climate change has rejected a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project proposal submitted by Tata Chemicals, a Tata Group firm.

Meanwhile, data with multilateral agency shows that Indian entities withdrew as many as six applications for projects related to cutting carbon emission, in 2008.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in a statement said it has rejected Tata Chemical's project at its fertiliser unit in Haldia, West Bengal.

UNFCCC, which sets the framework for inter governmental efforts to tackle climate change, did not approve the 'Biomass-based Hot Air Generation' at the company's fertiliser unit.

Tata Chemicals' proposal was rejected on February 13. The company had submitted the same on September 6, 2008.

CDM allows industrialised nations which have committed to bring down their greenhouse gas emissions, to invest in projects for the same purpose in developing countries.

The arrangement which is part of the Kyoto Protocol provides an alternative platform for developed nations to save on costs related to such emission reductions.

The project is aimed at reducing carbon emission by as much as 24,261 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum.
