During the last few years, the parent company has moved most of the business functions to India including project architecture, project management, pre-sales lead generation and marketing banking on the availability of talent in the country.
"Most of it (moving business functions to India) has already happened; whatever is remaining elsewhere is really for very good reasons. Expect for functions which require to be executed at the field level and requires non-English expertise apart from restrictions on data transfer, already 60-65% of the works are already happening from India," said Kumar Prabhas, Managing Director, Unisys India.
During the last four years, Unisys India has started many new practices such as project management, software architecture, sales, marketing and product management, and business operations.
According to the company, the number of architects at Unisys India has now grown to over 100 as compared to just 5-6 what it had around four years ago. The company now boasts of having project managers in excess of 100. Unisys India is also responsible for lead generation while the front-end sales are driven from the respective markets.
Besides, almost 50% of all its marketing activities that happen worldwide get done out of Unisys India.
"There are certain service lines now globally such as end users of services or enterprise computing, the entire business operation leadership are now based at Unisys India. We have added these practices on top of the core delivery functions," said Prabhas.
"It is not only the quantity in which we have grown but it is really the quality that excites me and the depth of services that have been led from here," he added.
NYSE-listed Unisys started its delivery centres in India in 2004 from Bangalore, and since then it has grown to a headcount of around 4,000, roughly around one-sixth (18%) of its global workforce.
However, in terms of hiring, around one-third of its new hires every year are done for the India operations underscoring the importance of the country in its global delivery map.
"Our India operation has been growing so fast because we find the talent here. Talent is a global phenomena and no country has a monopoly over it. The fact that there are plenty of engineering graduates available every year, it makes it lot easier for us to find the kind of people, capabilities and skill sets we are looking for, quite easily," said Bob Supnik, VP and General Manager of Engineering and Supply Chain operations at Unisys.
