“We are also planning to increase our network of agents and tourist operators in these towns for greater publicity and reach,” Kerala Tourism Deputy Director Nandakumar K P told Business Standard here.
Uttar Pradesh accounts for about 5 per cent of tourist inflow to Kerala compared to 2 per cent two years back. “The tourist flow from Uttar Pradesh is on the rise. The main reason is the rising economic prosperity in its emerging towns and growing awareness about domestic tourist destinations,” he said.
Nandakumar said Kerala offered the perfect holiday destination for Uttar Pradesh backpackers, who were simply looking for holistic relaxation and rejuvenation.
Meanwhile, foreign tourist arrivals in Kerala went up from 795,000 in 2012 to 858,000 in 2013, registering an increase of 8.12 per cent. Domestic tourist arrivals registered a 7.75 per cent rise with the number going up from about one crore to 1.08 crore last year. The total revenue, both direct and indirect, from the tourism sector touched Rs 22,926 crore compared to Rs 21,125 crore in 2012.
To augment tourism prospects across India, Kerala Tourism routinely holds promotional events in major cities of the country. The peak tourist season extends from November to April.
Beaches, backwaters, hill stations and wildlife are the major attractions of Kerala.
The ancient Indian medicine system Ayurveda and Panchakarma, the rejuvenation therapy in Ayurveda, are major elements of Kerala's tourism.
