UltraTech Cement (UCL), the country's second largest cement maker, has posted a rise of 45.84 per cent in its net profit at Rs 185.86 crore for the quarter ended September 30, 2007 against Rs 127.44 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. |
The Aditya Birla Group company's net sales during the period grew to Rs 1,173.41 crore compared with Rs 1,004.54 crore in the corresponding previous quarter, up 16.81 per cent. |

Higher sales, improved realisation and buoyant cement demand scenario helped the company post a robust show. |

The quarter also witnessed operating profit of the company rising to Rs 355.36 crore from Rs 266.39 crore on y-o-y basis, up 33.40 per cent. Earning per share for the quarter stood at Rs 14.93 against Rs 10.24. |

With capacity utilisation at 85 per cent, the company produced 3.34 million tonnes in September quarter tonnes against 3 million tonnes in the corresponding quarter last year. It sold 3.15 million tonnes of cement, up 12 per cent, compared with 2.8 million tonnes last year. |

UltraTech, with its current capacity of 17 million tonnes per annum (mtpa), has earmarked a capital expenditure of Rs 3,300 crore to take its production capacity to over 21 mtpa in the next three years. Expecting a huge growth, it is also setting up ready mix concrete (RMC) plants across the country. |
|
Despite the fact that the industry is adding over 90 million tonnes of capacity in the next three years, the company is optimistic about its future outlook. The company said fresh additions of capacities could result in a surplus scenario, thereby putting pressure on prices by the end of FY09. In a statement, the company said, "The demand for cement is expected to grow around 10 per cent linked, to GDP growth." |
|
Meanwhile, Indian cement makers' earnings have been trimmed by a rise in coal, power and freight costs. ACC, the nation's biggest producer, and Ambuja Cements reported profits that missed analyst forecasts. The companies are units of Holcim, the world's second-largest maker of the building material. |
