Uttam Dairy, a member union of the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation, which markets Amul brands, is planning to get into packaged tea.

The Ahmedabad union is already in talks with a couple of companies in Assam. "After purchasing ready-made tea from Assam, we will blend it here and sell in 250 gm, 500 gm and 1 kg packs under our brand name. The blue print is being worked out," said HA Nadiadwala, managing director, Uttam Dairy.

The dairy would launch the packaged tea in 8-10 months. "We believe this will create more value for our farmers," he said.

Besides, the Ahmedabad District Co-operative Milk Producers' Union Ltd is bullish on the packaged food business. The union is set to launch 'Uttam Namkeen' next month and is in process of launching 'Uttam Wafer' within the next-one-and-a-half months. Other namkeen products such as 'Chanadal' too are on the cards.

"We are launching 'Uttam Namkeen' on April 1 while 'Uttam Wafer' is in its final stages of launch. Initially, we will launch it on a trial basis. Once successful, we will scale up the production," he said.
