Ramesh Vangal, who brought spirits company Seagram's to India, is looking at entering into a strategic alliance with Inver House Distilleries, one of the world's largest suppliers of bulk Scotch. |
Inver House will pick up a stake in Vangal's liquor company, which will bottle some of its brands in India at prices ranging from Rs 400 to Rs 600. |
Vangal has two liquor companies, Katra Liquor, the holding company, which invests in other companies, and Mason & Summers Alcobev (named after a non-operating Inver House distillery in Scotland), a distribution subsidiary of Katra Liquor. |
Katra Liquor has acquired a considerable stake in the New Delhi-based Mohan Brothers, which imports and distributes well-known liquor brands like De Kuyper liqueur, Mateus Rose wine, Mac Arthur whisky, Balblair malt whisky and Orangeboom beer. Mac Arthur, Balblair and Hankey Banister are Inver House whisky brands. |
Rohit Mehra, the third generation proprietor of Mohan Brothers, refused to comment on the matter. |
But sources close to the development confirmed that Katra Liquor had acquired a stake in the company and said that synergies between the two entities existed in terms of marketing and distribution. |
This will be the second global spirits company Vangal is bringing to India. |
Vangal, a former head of Seagram in the Asia-Pacific region, divested his equity stake in Seagrams India a few years ago and steered clear of the liquor business for some years. |
Not long ago, Mason & Summers Alcobev launched the Wild Horse brand (whisky, brandy and rum). The company is currently charting out a business strategy to roll out the brand nationally. |
Vangal, who also spearheaded PepsiCo's entry into India in the mid-1980s, is the founder of Scandent group, an information technology (IT) organisation. The group's IT services business was merged with SSI's software services business. |
Scandent recently acquired the NYSE listed Aon Corporation's claim administration business, Cambridge Integrated Services Group. |
