Vatva GIDC has also brought in other industrial estates to be a part of the proposed waste exchange bank.

Vatva and other estates on the outskirts of the city discharge various chemicals effluents. Chemicals dumped by one unit as pollutant waste acts as a raw material for another unit.

Spent acid, a kind of liquid chemical waste, generated from sulphuric acid used in gypsum washeries of Vatva GIDC, can be treated and used as a key input in textile units. There is another such chemical which can be processed with chalk, to make raw material for cement industry.

Considering the potential usage of these chemical wastes, the Vatva GIDC has set the ball rolling for creating a waste exchange bank involving an investment of Rs. 11 crore. Other industrial estates like Odhav and Naroda industrial estates are also involved in the project, said Kirit Patel, president, Vatva Industries Association.

Vatva GIDC plans to supply spent acid generated from gypsum washeries to textile units. These washeries get 30 per cent spent acid as a byproduct of sulfuric acid. However, the industrial units will have to pay users charges for availing the services of waste exchange bank, he added.

Vatva GIDC is also upgrading its common effluent treatment plant (CETP) to control water pollution. The project would be implemented in two phases. The estate has entered into a co-operation agreement with Germany-based Plevio Enviro Gmbh. Vatva GIDC in Ahmedabad will be the first industrial estate in the country to join hands with any foreign entity.

The Germany company will not only provide the technology for CETP but it will also maintain the plant for the 10 years.
