Hindustan Zinc Ltd, part of Vedanta Resources, started production at its 170,000 tonnes-per-annum project at Chanderiya in Rajasthan during the weekend.

With this expansion, the capacity of Hindustan Zinc has increased to 400,000 tonnes per annum. The company has invested over Rs 1,500 crore in this project, which includes a 154-MW captive power plant and mine expansion at Rampura Agucha to 3.8 million tonnes of zinc ore per annum.

The project was completed ahead of schedule and below estimated costs. Hindustan Zinc is also increasing the production of silver threefold and expanding lead capacity from 35,000 tonnes to 85,000 tonnes per annum, which is nearing completion as per schedule.

Speaking on the occasion Anil Agarwal, chairman, Vedanta Resources, said, "Hindustan Zinc is making our country self-sufficient in zinc production while saving over $300 million annually in foreign exchange. India has the potential to become a significant global player in this sector. Vedanta's Rs 10, 000 crore investment is an endeavour to take India to a pre-eminent position in the global natural resources industry."

Hindustan Zinc's primary operations are mining and smelting. It is the only integrated zinc manufacturer in India, owns captive zinc mines that supply zinc concentrate for its smelters, and employs close to 6,000 people.

The company has open cast mines (Rampura Agucha mine) as well as underground mines (Rajpura Dariba and Zawar mines), along with three smelters.

Nearly 75 per cent of the zinc in India is used in galvanising and substantial investment in infrastructure is driving the demand.
