Venus Remedies gets patent for anti-biotic drug from Mexico

Drug maker Venus Remedies today said it has been granted patent for its anti-biotic product 'Sulbactomax' by the Mexican authorities.

The company has got the patent from the Instituto Mexicano de la Propiedad Industrial (IMPI) for one of its researched products 'Sulbactomax', Venus Remedies said in a statement.

"Venus Remedies will be launching Sulbactomax in the Mexican market by year 2012 and is targeting to capture one% of the total $176 million anti-infective market in the launch year itself," it said.

As per the company estimates, the Mexican pharmaceutical market is worth $19 billion.

With this patent grant the company now has 'Sulbactomax' patent in 42 countries, including Europe. The company's patent grant in Mexico is valid till 2024.

Sulbactomax, along with a chemical vector as third ingredient, is used for a wide range of indications due to its unique capability of fighting against resistance.

It is effective against lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, pre and post operative infections.

Shares of Venus Remedies today closed at Rs 214.50 on the Bombay Stock Exchange, down 0.42% from its previous close.
