Vinod Khosla sees big role for IT in healthcare

According to Khosla, currently there is a delayed, missed, and incorrect diagnosis in 10-20 of cases while 50 per cent of MDs are below-average

What has healthcare got to do with advances in information technology? Plenty, if you ask Vinod Khosla, co-founder of Sun Microsystems and Silicon Valley investor who runs Khosla Ventures.

Addressing the joint plenary of the International Conference on Transforming Healthcare with IT 2013 and the International Patient Safety Congress here on Saturday, Khosla envisaged that to a large extent technology was going to replace what doctors were doing. "Machines are better at integrative medicine," he pointed out.

Khosla said doctors and the patients had to jointly work on enabling technologies that make IT in healthcare a success.

Stating that nearly half of all American adults had difficulty understanding and acting upon health information, he said in the future, patients would have the data and analysis to become the 'CEO of your own health."

According to Khosla, currently there is a delayed, missed, and incorrect diagnosis in 10-20 of cases while 50 per cent of MDs are below-average. Over 40,000 patients in the United States may die with a misdiagnosis annually. .

The Patient Safety Congress saw the adoption of a first-of-kind Patient Safety Resolution, which seeks to set standards in ensuring better and safe patient care.
