Kolkata-based Visa Power Limited will set up a 1100MW power plant in Chhattisgarh with an investment of Rs 5000 crore.

The company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Chhattisgarh government on January 7.

Dheeru Powergen would invest Rs 4000 crore in Chhattisgarh for a 1,000MW plant.

In all, six private power companies signed pacts with the state to invest Rs 29800 crore for setting up coal-fired units with total capacity of 6,500MW.

The other companies were Sarda Energy and Minerals, DB Power, SKS Ispat and Power and Athena Chhattisgarh Power.

Each would invest Rs 5200 crore on 1,100MW thermal plants each.

According to officials, the power plants would come up in Korba and Raigarh districts which had coal reserves.

The companies were asked to submit requests for land after inspecting the area so that the state government could start the process.

The state government's industrial policy aimed, among other things, to make Chhattisgarh the power hub of the country by 2011 with 34 private companies signing agreements with the state government for thermal plants to produce 30,000MW.

Chhattisgarh chief minister Dr Raman Singh said at least 80 per cent of agreements for power units would take shape and Chhattisgarh could produce 22500MW by 2011.
