German automobile giant Volkswagen is exploring the possibility of entering India with an investment of Rs 1,500 crore. The company, which so far only has a presence in India through its Czech arm Skoda, is now planning to implement a three-pronged strategy.
This involves a foray into the passenger car market by selling cars under the Volkswagen brand name, the Scania range of commercial vehicles, and an enhanced presence of Skoda.
It is looking to acquire around 300 acres of land in Rajasthan, on the Jaipur-Delhi highway, for a manufacturing facility.

Volkswagen sources said the firm was interested in producing the Golf passenger car from this plant, and might consider launching the Lupo and Polo range as well.
It is not clear yet whether the Scania range of commercial vehicles would be manufactured at this plant. Volkswagen owns a controlling stake in Sweden-based Scania. Swedish major Volvo is already present at the top-end commercial vehicles market.
The India plans are still understood to be at an exploratory stage, and a final decision is awaited. In an e-mailed comment to Business Standard
