WB IISCO unit upgrade near completion

The plant will produce 2.9 million tonnes of hot metal after completion

Modernisation and expansion with an investment of Rs 16,000 crore at Steel Authority of India Ltd's IISCO Steel Plant in Burnpur, West Bengal, is nearing completion.

"The plant will produce 2.9 million tonnes of hot metal after completion," SAIL said on Saturday.

At the plant, some of the major facilities installed include a new seven-metre coke oven battery, two sinter machines, a 4,000-cubic-metre blast furnace, three 150-tonne basic oxygen furnace converters, two six-strand billet casters & one four-strand beam blank/bloom caster, universal section mill, wire rod and a bar mill. The new coke oven battery has begun trial operation and is supporting sister steel plants, said SAIL.

Product portfolio
The wire rod mill at the unit has also begun trial production, said the company.

After modernisation, the product portfolio will offer diametres ranging from 5.5 mm to 22 mm in low, medium and high carbon steel including high quality TMT grades, said SAIL.
