The BJP today exuded confidence that the Lokpal Bill will not be passed by the Rajya Sabha as the ruling Congress party does not enjoy comfortable majority in the Upper House.
"We are confident that the ruling party does not have enough numbers in Rajya Sabha. It (Lokpal Bill) should fall in the Upper House. They (Congress) will not be able to muster majority in the House," BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu told reporters outside Parliament House.
Refuting the Congress' charge that the BJP has betrayed people on Lokpal, Naidu made a counter charge saying it is they who betrayed people.
"The Congress has betrayed the people of the country on the issue of strong Lokpal Bill. Congress is aware of the fact that people of the country are in favour of a strong Lokpal. They did not have commitment to bring a strong Lokpal. They brought a weak Lokpal," he said.
"They did not have adequate numbers. And that is why they became a laughing stock before the nation yesterday," Naidu added.
He claimed the whole episode has "boomeranged" on Congress.
"They should have done some homework and should have consulted allies and then would have brought such a bill in Parliament. Without doing homework they have brought it and it has boomeranged on them. We want strong Lokpal. Our amendments were in that direction. Congress wants a weak Lokpal because they do not have any commitment," Naidu said.
