Goa Meat Complex Limited (GMCL), a state-run slaughter house, has told the high court that 60 per cent of the people in the state are beef-eaters.
The GMCL made this statement in their affidavit before the high court yesterday while responding to the petition filed by Govansh Raksha Abhiyan (GRA) against slaughtering of under age cattle in their abattoir situated at Usgaon village, 40 km away from here.
"On a daily basis, at present about 70-80 cattle are slaughtered (at GMCL). About 60 per cent of the population of Goa is beef eating (sic)," the affidavit reads.
The high court bench has asked GMCL to suffice their claim about the percentage of beef eating population by submitting the statistics.
The case would be heard again on June 26.
