Seven to twelve per cent women in Ahmedabad suffer from breast cancer but are not aware about the disease, according to a Abnormality report released by Indus Health Plus.

The numbers were released ahead the World Cancer Day, which is observed on February 4. Erratic lifestyle and wrong eating habits have aggravated the obesity cases amongst women, which are on the rise in the age group of 35-45 years, the report said.

Ahmedabad also reported slight increase in number of breast cancer cases. The percentage of women with higher risk of breast cancer increased to 7.15% from 6.45%, the report stated. Usage of reheated cooking oil, which lets out harmful ingredients affecting the stomach, has resulted in increase in number of stomach cancer cases, the report highlighted.

Stating that preventive check-up and early detection helps in effective treatment and increases life expectancy, Amol Naikawadi, joint managing director, Indus Health Plus said, "In India, 70 per cent lives are snuffed out in the first year, due to late detection of cancer. 80 per cent patients consult doctors at a stage when recovery is rare. Therefore it is necessary to generate awareness on cancer and its prevention to fight the malady."
