How safe are you? As the Supreme Court rejected a 10-year-old rape survivor’s plea to terminate her pregnancy, more cases of sexual abuse of children are being reported. In another case this May, the Supreme Court had allowed a child, who was allegedly raped by her stepfather, to undergo an abortion.

In 2015, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for the first time had tabulated data in terms of relationship of the victim and the accused in cases involving rape. According to the data compiled by the NCRB for 2015, 8,800 cases of rape on children were registered across the country under the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act. In 2,227 cases, or 25.3 per cent, the offenders were found to be employers or co-workers.

The data reveals

* 3,149 cases of rape (35.8%) were reported under POSCO in 2015 where neighbours were the biggest abusers
* In over 10% of cases last year, children were subjected to rape by their own family members or relatives
* In 94.8% cases, children were raped by someone known to them
* In terms of the regional spread of crimes against children, Uttar Pradesh has the highest number, followed by Madhya Pradesh. Delhi also has something to contribute.
