The Unique Identity Number (UID)-linked LPG subsidy programme will be launched across five districts in Andhra Pradesh, including Hyderabad, from May 15.
However, the government and the agencies responsible for implementing the programme are ensuring flexibility with regard to people who are yet to enroll themselves with Aadhaar by continuing the present system for some more time.
PV Ramesh, principal secretary - finance, on Friday said while the subsidy portion of a cylinder will be credited in advance into the account of the consumer starting May 15, the present system will continue for those who are yet to get the UID number. "Consumers without UID number can get LPG cylinders by paying the subsidised price, as is the current practice, till August 15 this year," he said.
Of these, around 2.4 million consumers have already enrolled themselves under Aadhaar while the government's endeavour is to encourage the enrollment of the remaining consumers as soon as possible, Ramesh said.
