Bharti Airtel and the Telangana government today launched public Wi-Fi for users of smartphones, tablets and other Wi-Fi-enabled devices, to connect to the Internet across a select stretch covering 17 locations in Hyderabad's IT hub.

Venkatesh Vijayraghavan, chief executive officer of Bharti Airtel in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, said all sections of people in these locations could now avail the Wi-Fi service and access Internet services of up to 750 MB a day per user for a limited period of three months. Bharti Airtel is offering an average Internet speed of 4 mbps and can go up to 42 mbps.

"We are now providing the service for free. However, we would be charging for usage above the prescribed limit. The exercise is more of a pilot study to examine the customer Internet consumption, and will help us understand the market better," Vijayraghavan told mediapersons.
