All domestic commercial flights to and from Bhubaneswar have been cancelled due to inclement weather conditions caused by the approach of severe cyclonic storm Phailin towards the Odisha coast.

Similarly, the East Coast Railway has cancelled all trains originating and passing through Odisha on Howrah-Chennai main line after heavy rains and wind lashed coastal areas due to the approaching cyclone.

“Out of 19 scheduled commercial flights operating from Biju Patnaik airport in Bhubaneswar, a couple of flights operated in the morning. With the weather conditions deteriorating gradually, we have cancelled all 17 flights scheduled for the day”, said Sarat Kumar, director of the airport.

These flights connected Bhubaneswar to destinations like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad.

However, the emergency flights carrying equipment and personnel of Army, Navy, Air Force and National Disaster Management Force (NDRF) to take part in rescue and relief operations are allowed to operate from the old terminal of the airport.

“All trains originating and passing through East Coast Railway zone on Howrah-Chennai line have been cancelled and diverted”, said a railway official. However, some long distance trains have been diverted through Chakradharpur-Rourkela-Bilaspur line, he added.
