The Tamil Nadu government has decided to approach the Supreme Court with regard to its appeal to the Centre to allocate power that is to be surrendered by the Delhi government.

The move comes after Minister of State for Power KC Venugopal commented further allocation was not feasible despite surplus power available in the Northern grid due to overloading of inter-regional transmission system, according to an official release.

Tamil Nadu requires around 12,000 Mw to meet the demand, whereas the production is only 8,000 Mw. To address the shortage, the state-run agency has signed an MoU with other states to buy 1,100 Mw. Public sector Power Grid Corporation of India did not take any steps to create network to transmit electricity from other states to Tamil Nadu, said the release. Earlier, chief minister J Jayalalithaa had written a letter to the Prime Minister seeking allocation of power surrendered by the Delhi government.
