Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday issued an order enhancing the upper age limit for direct recruitment in government services from 34 to 40 years, "to fill up vacant posts under various categories in the state."

"As the direct recruitment is being conducted after some gap, the need for enhancing the upper age limit from 34 years to 40 years is necessitated due to inevitability of bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, and the consequent fall out, shrinking opportunities to the educated unemployed youth in the state," chief secretary IYR Krishna Rao stated in the order.

The ad-hoc relaxation in the upper age limit would, however, will not be applicable for direct recruitment to uniformed services like police, excise, fire, prisons and forest departments for which physical standards have been prescribed in the state and subordinate service rules, he said.

"The opportunities that existed before the bifurcation of combined AP were lost after the bifurcation of the state. Hence the proposal to enhance the age limit from 34 years to 40 years became urgent need of the hour," Rao said.

The concession in the upper age limit to 40 years would be in force till September 30, 2016, during which, the recruiting agencies would notify vacancies under various categories,
