Even as the death penalty on those charged with and convicted of raping and causing the death of 'Nirbhaya' is set to be carried out on January 22, Assam, Delhi, and Haryana have the dubious distinction of featuring as the top three states in India on crimes against women.

The rate of crimes against women (calculated as crimes per 100,000 of the population) is the highest in Assam, the latest data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reveals. The crime rate per 100,000 women population is 58.8 in 2018 in comparison with 57.9 in 2017.  However, it is Uttar Pradesh which contributes the most to all-India crimes against women.

Nagaland and Sikkim have reported such a low rate of crimes against women that their contribution to the all-India figure is zero.

A majority of cases under crimes against women were registered under “cruelty by husband or his relatives (31.9 per cent)”, followed by “assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty (27.6 per cent)”, “kidnapping & abduction of women (22.5 per cent)”, and “rape (10.3 per cent)”.
