Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron has earned Rs 35.74 crore at the Indian box office, in its opening weekend. This puts it just behind Fast and furious 7, which in its first weekend outing in India had made Rs 48 crore.

However, it should be pointed out that while Avengers opened in around 1500 screens, F7 opened in around 2200 screens. Moreover, the Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson starrer enjoyed a four day weekend, since it released on April 2, which was the start of the Easter weekend. If one takes a strictly three day weekend (Friday-Sunday), the two films are neck to neck, with F7’s Friday to Sunday collection in the first weekend being Rs 36 crore.

The Avengers opened with Friday collections of Rs 10.98 crore, the second highest after F7’s opening of Rs 12 crore. It followed this act with a stronger Saturday at Rs 11.85 crore and Rs 12.91 crore on Sunday.

This also means that the second film in the Marvel’s Avengers series, and the 11th in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is inching closer to the lifetime collection record of its predecessor (Avengers, released in 2012) of Rs 56 crore.

The seventh instalment of the Fast and Furious series, Furious 7 or F7, created history in India by becoming the first Hollywood movie to cross the Rs 100 crore net (after tax) collection mark. Until then, James Cameron’s Avatar was the top grossing Hollywood film with Rs 78 crore. F7 surpassed Avatar’s lifetime collection in under two weeks and crossed the Rs 100 crore mark within three weeks of release in India.

It was released in a 2200 screens initially. However, the theatrical distributor of the film, Universal Pictures, then took the screen count up to 2800 during the first week itself seeing the demand for the movie. It was the widest release ever for a Hollywood film in the country, mainly because it was available in non-DCI complaint screens as well.

Trade pundits believe that the lower number of screens for the Avengers movie will not impact the film’s performance at the box office. Already, the movie’s average revenue per screen (for three days) exceeds that of F7. While F7 had an average revenue per screen of Rs 1.6 lakh, Avengers’ per screen revenue stands at Rs 2.33 lakh. A huge factor in this has been the average ticket price of the film, which is on an average 30 per cent more than what was in case of F7.

All eyes are now on the lifetime collection that Avengers will make in India and whether it will be able beat F7’s record in the country. While ticket prices and marketing for the film is aggressive, the Hollywood flick will face competition from Akshay Kumar starrer Gabbar which releases on May 1, and Marathi film Time Pass 2. F7 on the other hand, had a clean run for three weeks, with Byomkesh Bakshy!, the only prominent simultaneous release, failing to make any impact at the box office.
