Public transport in most cities across the country was affected while banks and financial institutions remained closed on the second day of two-day nationwide bandh called by major trade unions to protest against the anti-labour policies of the government.

Banking operations were severely hit for the second day today as public sector bank employees continued their strike. Employees of public sector insurance companies, including LIC and New India Assurance, also participated in the strike.

Yesterday, cheque clearing operations, electronic fund transfers, forex transactions and money market operations were disrupted across the country due to the strike and the situation remained more or less similar as per the latest reports.

In the capital's suburb of Noida, where large scale violence took place yesterday because of the bandh, situation remained tense. The SHO of the area has been transferred for failing to control violence. There was a massive deployment of police force all along the city because of the violence.

Employees of private sector auto majors like Maruti, Hero and Suzuki have also decided to join the two-day strike today.

In Kolkata, public transport remained off the roads, with markets across Kolkata partially open. In Bihar, there were reports of bandh supporters stopping trains in Arah and Jehanabad stations. In Lucknow, too, commuters were severely affected as public transport was unavailable.

In Kerala, normal life was paralysed as workers from most sectors ranging from transport to banking kept away from work. Reports from across the state said buses and taxis were off the roads and markets remained shut. Train and air services were not affected.

Attendance in government offices was thin and educational institutions remained closed as pro-Left service and teachers unions joined the strike. Universities have cancelled examinations scheduled for the last two days.

In IT city of Bangalore, and also elsewhere in Karnataka, the strike had no major impact today. Though banking services were hit, many buses, taxis and autos plied and shops and hotels remained opened here. However, schools and colleges were closed.
