BJP on Sunday appealed all politicians from northeastern states to support the candidature of P A Sangma in presidential election.

“I appeal to all political parties of the region to shed their political differences and unanimously support the candidature of Sangma who is representing the tribal community,” BJP national secretary Tapir Gao told reporters here.

Terming the former Lok Sabha speaker as a man with vast experience in politics and having all leadership qualities, he said Sangma would be the right choice as he would work for the tribal cause.

“It is a pride for the people of northeast that a tribal leader is opting to contest the presidential election,” Gao said.

MNF to support Sangma

Main opposition party in Mizoram, Mizo National Front (MNF) is likely to support the candidature of Purno A Sangma as President of India when the polling will be held on July 19.

Former chief minister and MNF chief Zoramthanga told PTI on Sunday that formal announcement would be made during this week after the meeting of the party high command on the issue.

“I think we will support Sangma as he is a tribal from North-East and also a Christian as the country is yet to have a tribal and a Christian in the top post,” Zoramthanga said.

MNF has one member of parliament (Rajya Sabha) and four legislators including a member of its junior partner - Mara Democratic Front (MDF).
