CAA, NRC protests Highlights: Rahul hits out at PM over clothes remark

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tells Delhi rally Citizenship (Amendment) Act and National Register of Citizens (NRC) are not agains Muslims.

Two Opposition parties are holding protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act on Monday, rejecting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s defence of the controversial law a day before.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and allies are holding a rally in Chennai, led by party chief M K Stalin, Congress leader P Chidambaram and Vaiko, leader of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. In New Delhi, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi will hold a ‘satyagrah’ at Rajghat to protest against the Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

“The law does not impact 1.3 billions Indians, and I must assure Muslim citizens of India that this law will not change anything for them,” said Modi in Delhi on Sunday about the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

BJP trying to fool country on NRC issue: Congress

"Welcome to the conversation PM Modi, the country has been waiting for you. It's sad that the first time you've addressed the growing unrest in our nation you do so with hate & lies, but alas, what more can we expect from the Divider in Chief," the opposition party said on Twitter. "Saheb speaks in Delhi that there was no discussion on NRC, but in the Jharkhand election manifesto on November 28, the BJP promised to implement the NRC. "Now tell two things - No harmony between PM and Home Minister? Is there a rift between power and organisation?. Or together they are making a fool of the country," Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said.

UP police say recovered 700 cartridges during anti-CAA protests

UP police on Monday claimed more than 700 cartridges were recovered during anti-citizenship law protests in the state, maintaining that they did not use any of them. On Monday, the state remained peaceful with no report of any untoward incident. "Law and order is under control, situation is normal in UP. 213 FIRs have been filed, 925 persons have been arrested so far (since Dec 10) in connection with anti-CAA protests in the state," an official statement issued by police said. As many as 288 policemen have suffered injuries, of which 62 have firearm injuries. "Live and fired cartridges of non-prohibited bore (not used by police) in excess of 700 have been recovered from 'peacefully protesting' citizens," the police tweeted.

Top Congress leaders sit on 'Satyagraha' at Rajghat

Top Congress leaders, including former prime minister Manmohan Singh, former party chief Rahul Gandhi and general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, participated in the 'Satyagraha'. The party held that in line with the path of non-violence shown by Mahatma Gandhi, it will fight against the "dictatorial" government and to protect the "sacred" Constitution. The Congress said there is widespread resentment against the recent actions of the BJP government, where people across the country, especially the youth, are demanding the restoration and maintaining the sanctity of rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

Deliberate attempt made to spread rumours on CAA: Fadnavis

Former Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday said a "deliberate" attempt was being made to spread rumours and create a divide in society over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. Without naming any party, he said some political outfits were trying to disrupt harmony in society, and asserted that minorities in the country were safe. "Rumours are being spread about the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. There is a deliberate attempt to create a divide in society and it is condemnable. The Act is not against any religion, and there is no provision in it to take away the citizenship of any citizen of the country," Fadnavis told reporters.

Bail pleas of 15 people held for Daryaganj violence dismissed

A Delhi court on Monday dismissed the bail pleas of 15 people arrested in connection with the violence over the new citizenship law in Old Delhi's Daryaganj.

Metropolitan Magistrate Kapil Kumar rejected the pleas. On Saturday, the court had sent the accused to two days' judicial custody till Monday.

Students protesting outside UP Bhawan detained

As many as 46 students were detained outside the Uttar Pradesh Bhawan here on Monday when they were about to begin a protest against the police's action during anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act demonstrations in the state. The protesters were demanding the resignation of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over the issue. There are 27 women among those detained. The students were detained as soon as they reached the venue and taken to the Mandir Marg police station, they claimed. Initially, former JNU Students' Union president N Sai Balaji and All India Students' Association (AISA) Delhi unit president Kawalpreet Kaur were detained the moment they reached.
