The Centre today filed a 41-page affidavit in SC spelling out the steps to bring autonomy in the functioning of CBI.
CBI said the affidavit has been filed to place on record recommendations of GoM on making CBI autonomous.
Appointment of CBI director is to be made by a committee comprising PM, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and CJI or an SC judge, Centre told the apex court. Prime Minister will be the chairman of the committee, it added.
The affidavit said that the CBI director cannot hold the post for more than 2 years and cannot be transferred without the consent of the committee headed by PM. The director can be removed from office only by the order of President, it added.
Centre also proposed to set up an accountability commission to inquire into allegations against CBI officials.
