The Centre has decided to allow import of vehicles through the Kattupalli port near Chennai, and Pipavav port, a move which would result in reduced transaction costs for the original equipment manufacturers.
Minister of State for Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan in a written reply in the Lok Sabha recently said that in order to increase vehicle imports ,to reduce handling issues and transaction costs for manufacturers, the Centre had recently decided to add two more non-major ports, namely, Kattupalli port and Pipavav port, for the import of vehicles.
Among the country's major ports, the Jawaharlal Nehru port, Mumbai port, Kolkata port, Chennai port, Kamarajar port and Cochin Port, are permitted by the ministry of commerce and industry to import vehicles.
