Anti-Citizenship Act protests LIVE updates: Violent protests against Citizenship Amendment Act are "deeply distressing”, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as tensions ran high across India today against the contentious legislation.
 

As many as 50 students of Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia university were released early Monday after being detained by the police for over six hours. Jamia Millia Islamia Vice-Chancellor Najma Akhtar asserted that the university would not tolerate police presence on campus and demanded a high-level inquiry into the crackdown on the students.

"Police entered the campus without permission. We will not tolerate police presence on campus. They scared our students with police brutality. There has been huge damage to university property," Akhtar said at a press conference.

Students of IIM Bangalore, IISc Bangalore, Moulana Azad National Urdu University in Hyderabad, Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi and Kolkata’s Jadavpur University also held demonstrations in solidarity with the Jamia students. Meanwhile, Assam has resumed internet after shutting down services to quell rumours last week.

Delhi CM while speaking at 'Agenda AajTaK 2019' said that students have been protesting against the amended law across the country and the Centre should consider their demands. He added that the law is 'dangerous' and asserted that AAP had opposed it in Parliament.
