Japanese PM cancels India visit over violent protests in Northeast against new citizenship law

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visit to India for an annual summit with his counterpart Narendra Modi in Guwahati was on Friday cancelled in the wake of violent protests over the amended citizenship law in India's northeast. Both sides have decided to "defer" Abe's visit for the December 15-17 summit to a mutually convenient date, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said without giving any reason for the decision.

BJP to launch public campaign about Citizenship Act

The Bharatiya Janata Party says will launch a public awareness programme about the Citizenship Act "dispel the propaganda" that the legislation is against any community. The campaign will focus on states where the legislation's beneficiaries are in large numbers, West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh told PTI. He estimated that over two crore people can get Indian citizenship under the amended Act.

India's northeast states braced for another day of protests against the Citizenship Amendment Bill, after at least two people were killed in Guwahati when police fired at protesters on Thursday.

The law seeks to grant Indian nationality to Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Jains, Parsis and Sikhs who fled Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan before 2015. But thousands of protesters in Assam, which shares a border with Bangladesh, say the measure would open the region to a flood of foreign migrants.

Mobile internet and SMS services were blocked across Meghalaya for two days, and an indefinite curfew imposed in parts of its capital city Shillong after protests against the Bill, which President Ram Nath Kovind singed into law Thursday night.
