Chief minister Siddaramaiah re-established his supremacy over Mysore district when his party candidate bagged the Periyapatna Assembly seat today.
It was a tough battle between Siddaramaiah and former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy in the counting of votes at Periyapatna where both had campaigned. Though Janata Dal candidate K Mahadev gave a tough fight, he lost by a margin of a little over 2,000 votes to Congress candidate K Venkatesh. Incidentally, it was a hattrick for the Congress candidate, a former minister.
Venkatesh secured 62,045 votes while his closest rival Mahadev mustered 59,957 votes. Both the BSR Congress and BJP candidates were humbled in the re-scheduled election that took place on May 28.
BSR Congress candidate H D Ganesh came third with 5,669 votes. The BJP was driven to a humiliating fourth place. It had filled the gap left by the death of Sannamogegowda with R T Sathish. Sathish managed a meagre 3,731 votes. Both lost their deposits along with four other candidates.
The JD(S) candidate maintained lead till the completion of the fourth round raising hopes of his party's victory.
But coming from behind, the Congress candidate took the lead, though slender, and maintained it till the end to add a feather to the ruling Congress' cap whose tally now has gone up to 122 in the 224-member state Assembly.
The constituency saw a record 83.84 per cent polling.
