Coronavirus live updates: India recorded 36,083 new cases of Covid-19 and 493 deaths from the disease in the last 24 hours, said the health ministry on Sunday.

Mumbai will restart commuter train services for fully vaccinated residents from Sunday, a move that could tackle traffic jams that are popping up as Covid-19 cases drop off but also one that risks transmitting the virus across India’s financial hub.

Punjab will from Monday allow entry to only those people who are either fully vaccinated against the coronavirus or have a medical report saying they are not infected.

Germany reported 5,644 new coronavirus infections Saturday, the biggest daily increase since the end of May. Israel administered 70,000 booster shots this weekend, as people between the ages of 50 and 59 became eligible, according to the Haaretz newspaper.

Nagaland reports 54 new COVID-19 cases, four more fatalities

Nagaland on Sunday reported 54 new COVID-19 infections, pushing the state's caseload to 29,151, while deaths of four more patients increased the death toll to 601, a health department official said. Of the fresh cases, 27 were reported from Kohima, 16 from Peren, four from Mokukchung, three from Mon, and two each from Wokha and Zunheboto.

 

At least 102 more people were cured of the infection during the day, taking the total number of recovered persons to 26,490, the official said.

 

The recovery rate among coronavirus patients in the state currently stands at 90.87 per cent. The state now has 1,224 active cases, while 836 coronavirus patients have migrated to other states. A total of 289,606 samples have been tested for COVID-19 in the state thus far, and over 6.39 lakh people have been inoculated.

Punjab logs 50 fresh cases, 2 deaths

Punjab on Sunday reported two Covid-related fatalities, taking the death toll to 16,342, while 50 fresh cases pushed the infection tally to 5,99,942, according to a medical bulletin. The deaths were reported from Amritsar and Pathankot. The number of active cases rose to 577 from 572 on Saturday, the bulletin showed.

 

Amritsar and Mohali reported eight cases each, followed by four each in Ferozepur, Gurdaspur and Patiala, it stated.

 

With 39 more patients recovering from the infection, the number of people cured of the disease in the state stands at 5,83,023, as per the bulletin. Meanwhile, Chandigarh reported a single COVID-19 case which took its infection tally to 62,029, according to its medical bulletin. The death toll due to the disease in the union territory stands at 811. The number of active cases in the city stands at 44, while that of recoveries is at 61,174.

Bengal reports 12 more COVID-19 deaths, 673 fresh cases

West Bengal's COVID-19 death toll climbed to 18,303 on Sunday after 12 more patients succumbed to the virus, while 673 fresh cases pushed the tally to 15,38,563, a health department bulletin said.

 

The state now has 10,030 active cases, and 15,10,230 people have recovered from the disease so far, including 709 since Saturday.

 

North 24 Parganas district reported the highest number of single-day deaths at three, followed by two each in Kolkata, Howrah and Nadia, it said.

 

The fresh cases include 85 from North 24 Parganas, 77 in Kolkata and 71 in Darjeeling.

 

Altogether, 1,63,87,157 samples have been tested for COVID-19 in West Bengal thus far, the bulletin added.

Sri Lanka tightens guidelines with night curfews

Sri Lanka on Sunday further tightened health guidelines by imposing night curfews in a bid to arrest the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

 

The night curfew will be effective from 10 PM to 4 AM from August 16 until further notice, said Army Commander Shavendra Silva, the head of the national operations center for COVID-19 prevention. The authorities have also banned all public gatherings.

 

Weddings at homes and reception halls would be banned from August 17. Restaurants would function with only at a 50 per cent capacity. Earlier, the government had reduced the number of guests invited for wedding receptions. The move came as the government ignored medical professionals' advice to order a total lockdown.

Mumbai logs 267 new cases, four deaths; 308 patients recuperate

Mumbai reported 267 coronavirus positive cases on Sunday, taking the city's infection count to 7,39,336, while four deaths pushed the toll to 15,989, civic authorities said.

 

Notably, this is the seventh day in a row when the number of new cases in the megalopolis remained under 300. Also, this is the ninth occasion in August when the single-day infection count of the city remained below this figure.

 

The country's financial capital had reported 262 COVID-19 cases and six deaths on Saturday.

 

A health bulletin issued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that 308 patients were discharged from hospitals on Sunday, which took the overall recovery figure to 7,18,083. The number of active COVID-19 cases in Mumbai is 2,834, it said.

Night curfew extended in 8 Gujarat cities till Aug 28

The coronavirus-induced night curfew in eight cities of Gujarat was on Sunday extended till August 28, officials said. The curfew will be in place from 11pm till 6am in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot, Junagadh, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar and Gandhinagar, they said.

Tamil Nadu logs 1,896 new Covid-19 infections, 23 fatalities

Tamil Nadu added 1,896 new COVID-19 on Sunday, pushing the overall caseload to 25,88,781, while 23 fatalities took the toll to 34,519.

Recoveries were lesser in number with 1,842 people getting discharged in the last 24 hours, aggregating to 25,33,804, leaving 20,458 active infections, a health department bulletin said.
