Mizoram issues new Covid-19 guidelines with more relaxations

The Mizoram government has issued new COVID-19 guidelines with a few more relaxations to ease economic and other activities in Aizawl Municipality Corporation (AMC) area and other parts of the state.
 
The new guidelines will come into effect on October 3 and will remain in force in the state till October 16.
 
The order issued on Friday night said that it has been felt necessary to give more focus on providing better treatment to COVID-19 patients than imposing stringent restrictions despite a spurt in COVID-19 cases.

Covid-19 may trigger high sugar levels, worsen disease

Covid-19 infection triggers hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar levels, by disrupting key fat cells, bringing high risks of severe disease and death in many patients, according to a new study.
 
Hyperglycemia, the core feature of diabetes, is associated with inflammation and weakened immunity against infections, and was recognised as a significant risk factor for severe Covid-19 early in the pandemic.
 
However, doctors later began finding evidence that Covid-19 is associated with hyperglycemia in patients who have no history of diabetes.

California to require COVID-19 vaccines for schoolchildren

California will become the first US state to require COVID-19 vaccinations for children to attend public and private schools in person in a mandate that could effect millions of students.
 
Governor Gavin Newsom on Friday announced that the coronavirus shot will be added to 10 other immunizations already required for school kids, including those for measles and mumps.

Latur civic body geared up to tackle possible third wave of pandemic: Mayor

In a bid to tackle the possible third wave of coronavirus, the Latur Municipal Corporation (LMC) in Maharashtra has made several arrangements with the help of various organisations, like keeping ready 20,000 Remdesivir injections, 20 oxygen concentrators and 10 BiPAP machines, Mayor Vikrant Gojamgunde said on Saturday.
 
The civic body efficiently tackled the first and the second waves of the pandemic. But now, there is a threat of the third wave, which is why the LMC has made preparations, he said.
 
The municipal corporation did not have to spend a single rupee to purchase this material - the Remdesivir injrections, oxygen concentrators and BiPAP machines. The things have been made available free of cost by the companies, Gojamgunde added.

Hong Kong overtakes US in vaccinations after slow start

Hong Kong has fully vaccinated 55.8% of its population against Covid-19, surpassing the U.S., but has yet to announce plans to reopen its borders.
 
The Asian financial hub has administered almost 8.7 million shots from BioNTech and Sinovac Biotech, after high levels of vaccine hesitancy initially curbed demand for the inoculations.

Pondy registers 82 new cases of COVID-19

Puducherry clocked 82 fresh cases of coronavirus during the last twenty-four hours ending 10 a.m. on Saturday, raising the overall tally to 126,000.
 
The new cases identified at the end of examination of 5,012 samples were spread over Puducherry 50, Karaikal 21, Yanam 3 and Mahe 8. The active cases were 767 of whom 110 were undergoing treatment in hospitals while the remaining 657 patients were in home isolation. While 106 patients were discharged after recovery during last twenty- four hours the total recoveries stood at 1,23,906. Director of Health Department G. Sriramulu said no fresh fatality was reported from any of the four regions of Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam in the last 24 hours. The toll remained 1,840.

Over 881.4 mn vaccine doses provided to states/UTs so far: Health ministry

More than 881,450,515 Covid-19 vaccine doses have been provided to the states and union territories so far by the Government of India through free of cost channel and through direct state procurement, informed the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Saturday.
 
According to the ministry, over 52,828,050 balance and unutilised Covid-19 vaccine doses are still available with states/UTs to be administered.
 
The ministry stated that the Union Government is committed to accelerating the pace and expanding the scope of Covid-19 vaccination throughout the country.
 

Coronavirus live updates: India recorded 24,354 new cases of Covid-19 and 277 deaths in 24 hours, said the health ministry on Saturday. Total Covid-19 cases reached 33.77 million and death toll 448,573. Active caseload at 273,889; lowest in 197 days.

Active cases—people under treatment for Covid-19--comprise 0.82 per cent of total infections: the lowest since March 2020. The national recovery rate is at 97.86 per cent: the highest since March 2020, the ministry said.

India's factory activity improved last month as a recovery in the economy from the pandemic-induced slump boosted demand and output, according to a private survey, but firms reduced headcount at the sharpest pace since May. The country collected Rs 1.17 trilion as Goods and Services Tax in September: the third month straight the amount was more than a trillion.

World coronavirus update: Covid-19 is continuing to spread around the world, with 234,525,066 confirmed cases and 4,796,408 deaths across nearly 200 countries recorded since China reported its first cases in December 2019. The US remains the worst-hit country with 44,314,403 cases, followed by India, Brazil, UK and Russia.
