Coronavirus live updates: As day after slight decline in the number of new cases, India on Wednesday recorded 47,262, taking to tally to 11,780,157, according to MoHFW. The death toll from the deadly infection jumped to 160,642. India has the 7th highest number of active cases globally.
Maharashtra reported as many as 31,855 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, its highest ever single-day spike since the outbreak of the pandemic last year. This took the state's overall caseload to 25,64,881.
The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (2,533,026), Kerala (1,105,467), Karnataka (971,647), Andhra Pradesh (894,044), and Tamil Nadu (868,367).
Meanwhile, the government has decided to open up its vaccination drive for all above 45 years of age from April 1, and requested that all eligible people should “immediately register and get vaccinated”. The rest of the population could be considered for vaccination coverage once the current stage is over.
