Coronavirus update: The number of coronavirus cases in India jumped to 2,158,408 as the country reported 64,399 new infections on Sunday. The death toll reached 43,518, according to Health Ministry.

The five most affected states by a total tally of cases are Maharashtra (490,262), Tamil Nadu (279,144), Andhra Pradesh (206,000), Karnataka (158,254), and Delhi (142,723). Easing restrictions, the West Bengal government has decided to allow international charter flights carrying Indian nationals with COVID-negative certificates to land at the airports in the state, a senior official said on Saturday. The restrictions on Vande Bharat Mission flights will, however, continue.

US Covid cases top 5 million; Brazil hits grim milestone of 100,000 deaths

According to a Reuters tally, the United States has hit a record 5 million cases of Covid-19.
 
Last week, the country’s top infectious diseases official had offered hope to citizens citing that an effective vaccine might be available by the year end. 
 
Meanwhile, Brazil surpassed a grim milestone of 100,000 deaths from Covid-19, five months after the first reported case. The country has not shown signs of crushing the disease.
 
The nation of 210 million people has been reporting an average of more than 1,000 daily deaths from the pandemic since late May and reported 905 for the latest 24-hour period. In a tribute to victims, the non-governmental group Rio de Paz placed crosses on the sand on the famed Copacabana beach.

Covid-19 crisis: Russia to register world's first vaccine on Wednesday

Russia’s all set to register world’s first Covid-19 vaccine on August 12, according to reports. The vaccine is being jointly developed by Gamaleya Research Institute and the Russian Defence Ministry.
 
Russia’s Deputy Health Minister Oleg Gridnev on Saturday confirmed the development. “The vaccine developed by the Gamaleya centre will be registered on August 12. At the moment, the last, third, stage is underway.
 
Medical professionals and senior citizens will be the first to get vacci­nated,” Gridnev had said. The country plans to begin mass production of the vaccine from October 2020.

Covid-19: Record 700,000 tests conducted in a day, says health ministry

Over 700,000 samples have been examined for Covid-19 in a day, taking the cumulative tests conducted so far to 2,41,06,535, the Union Health Ministry said on Sunday.
 
With a record single-day increase of 64,399 cases, India's Covid tally mounted to 2.15 million, while the death toll climbed to 43,379 with 861 new fatalities being reported in a day, the ministry's data updated at 8 am showed.
 
 
The number of recoveries too has surged to 14,80,884 with 53,879 Covid patients having discharged in 24 hours, the highest in a day so far, pushing the recovery rate to 68.78 per cent. Recoveries are over twice the number of active cases (628,747) of Covid infection at present. The fatality rate has dropped to 2.01 per cent, it said.

Britain records more than 1,000 new infections, highest since June

Britain has recorded more than 1,000 new coronavirus infections in a day for the first time since late June.
 
Government statistics say 1,062 new cases of Covid-19 were reported in the 24 hours until 9 a,m. Sunday. The last time the number was over 1,000 was on June 26.
 
 
Britain has seen a gradual rise in coronavirus infections since it began lifting lockdown restrictions in mid-June. The government has put the next stage of reopening, which had been due to take effect August 1, on hold for at least two weeks.
 
The number of patients hospitalised with the virus continues to decline, as does the daily number of deaths. Eight new Covid-19 fatalities were reported Sunday.

230 new Covid-19 cases reported in Uttarakhand

Uttrakhand reported 230 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday taking the total count to 9,632 in the state.
 
According to official data, the total number of cases includes 6,134 recovered cases, 3,334 active cases, and 125 deaths.
 
39 Covid-19 positive patients have also migrated from the state, as per the official data.

Italy reports 463 new virus cases

Italy's tally of daily new Covid-19 cases leaped higher on Sunday, with 463 cases, according to Health Ministry figures.
 
Many of the latest cases have been found in young people returning from vacations abroad.
 
Italy's day-to-day new caseload had previously soared far above 500 confirmed infections, but the number had dropped to 347 on Saturday, more in line with numbers of the past few weeks.
 
For months, the region with by far the most daily new coronavirus infections had been Lombardy, the northern region where Italy's outbreak erupted in February.

Covid hits 3,800 central security personnel in northeast

As coronavirus spreads across the northeast, nearly 3,800 central security force personnel have so far infected by the disease in almost all the states in the region, officials said on Sunday.
 
According to the health officials, the eight northeastern states have so far recorded around 75,000 Covid-19 cases, including 57,714 in Assam.
 
Of the 3,800 Covid cases among the central armed forces personnel, the highest number are in Nagaland, at 1,226, followed by 823 in Manipur, 738 in Arunachal Pradesh, 360 in Tripura, 350 in Mizoram and 300 in Meghalaya. Many of their family members, including children, were also infected.

246 new Covid-19 cases reported in Ludhiana, toll 10

A total of 246 new Covid-19 cases and 10 deaths were reported in Punjab's Ludhiana district in the last 24 hours, a statement from the District Public Relations Office said on Sunday.
 
Quoting Deputy Commissioner Varinder Singh, the statement informed that under the "Mission Fateh", the number of COVID-19 cases that are being cured in Ludhiana are increasing with each passing day.

Chhattisgarh Covid-19 tally crosses 12,000-mark with 285 new cases

Chhattisgarh reported 285 new coronavirus positive cases, which pushed its tally to 12,148 on Sunday, a health official said.
 
Six new fatalities took the count of dead in the state to 96 so far, he said.
 
During the day, 227 patients were discharged following their recovery, he said.

MP CM to give plasma for treatment of Covid-19 patients

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Sunday said he would donate his blood plasma for treatment of Covid-19 patients.
 
Chouhan had tested positive for coronavirus on July 25 and remained hospitalised for 11 days before he was discharged on August 5.
 
"I was tested positive for Covid-19 earlier and I am perfectly healthy now after treatment. Antibodies to fight coronavirus must have been developed in my body and so I will soon donate plasma for therapy," an official release quoted the chief minister as saying while reviewing the Covid-19 situation in the state via video conferencing.
