Coronavirus live updates: India recorded 39,070 new cases of Covid-19 and 491 deaths from the disease in the last 24 hours, said the health ministry on Sunday.
 
India’s total cases are at 319,344,55 and overall fatalities at 427,862 after the ministry’s latest numbers.

India approved on Saturday Johnson & Johnson’s single dose Covid-19 vaccine for emergency use, making it the country’s fifth approved vaccine against the disease.

Kerala will allow shops in malls to open from August 11 onwards, listing safety measures the businesses have to take for the coronavirus.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands found two new Covid-19 cases in 24 hours to take its total to 7,546, PTI reported on Monday quoting a government health bulletin said. As many as 129 people have succumbed to Covid in the archipelago yet.

Recoveries outnumber positive Covid cases in Karnataka

With the recovery of 1,914 patients recoveries outnumbered 1,598 fresh Covid cases and Dakshina Kannada district bordering Kerala surpassing Bengaluru in positive cases in Karnataka, according to the Health Department on Sunday.

 

"With 1,598 new cases registered on Saturday, the state's Covid tally rose to 29,18,525, including 23,930 active cases, while 28,57,776 recovered, with 1,914 patients discharged during the day," said the bulletin.

 

As epi-centre of the pandemic in the state, Bengaluru reported 348 fresh cases on Saturday, taking the city's Covid tally to 12,30,486 including 8,493 active cases, while 12,06,078 recovered so far, with 366 patients discharged in the last 24 hours.

Assam adds 568 Covid cases, 15 more deaths

Assam's COVID-19 tally increased to 5,74,100 on Sunday as 568 more people tested positive for the disease in the state, the National Health Mission (NHM) said. The state reported 15 more deaths due to the disease, it said.

 

Three deaths were reported from Kamrup Metropolitan, two from Golaghat, and one each from Baksa, Biswanath, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Karimganj, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari and Sivasagar districts. With these, the death toll has climbed to 5,387.

 

The NHM said 1,347 more COVID-19 patients have died, but the government's Death Audit Board has not included them in the toll as the patients suffered from other ailments too. Of the new cases, Kamrup Metropolitan reported the highest at 123, followed by 40 in Lakhimpur, 38 in Jorhat and 27 in Kamrup.

UK health chief sees ''unfair'' pricing for COVID travel tests

Britain's competition watchdog said Sunday it will look into the cost of COVID-19 testing for travelers after Health Secretary Sajid Javid complained that high prices for the government-mandated tests were preventing some people from going on vacation.

 

PCR tests required for most travelers average about 75 pounds (USD104) each, or 300 pounds for a family of four, but many firms charge significantly more. Prices quoted by providers listed on the government website range from 17 pounds (USD24) to 250 pounds (USD347).

 

Javid said Sunday that he had asked the Competition and Markets Authority to crackdown on unfair market practices by test providers. People should be able to go on holiday, whether it's to see family or just to relax, without fearing excessive fees for PCR tests,'' he said on Twitter.

Maharashtra CM warns of lockdown if state sees rise in Covid infections

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday warned that a lockdown shall be imposed if the state witnesses a surge in the number of COVID-19 cases. Addressing the people of the state through social media today, Thackeray said that Maharashtra has made preparations ahead of the third wave of COVID-19.

 

He said that the state now has 600 testing labs, the number of isolation beds increased to more than 4.5 lakh, and there is availability of 34,507 ICU beds and 1,10,683 oxygen beds. He also pointed out that the state presently has 13,500 ventilators.

 

Thackeray highlighted that 20 lakh people were affected in the first wave and 40 lakh people in the second wave. He said that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has started Genome Sequencing Lab.

56 new cases in Punjab

Three more Covid-related fatalities were reported in Punjab which took the death toll to 16,316 on Sunday, while 56 new cases pushed the infection tally to 5,99,482, according to a medical bulletin. The three deaths were reported from Amritsar, Hoshiarpur and Tarn Taran, it said, adding the number of active cases stands at 456.

 

Of the new cases, Mohali reported 11, followed by seven each in Bathinda and Jalandhar and six in Ludhiana, according to the bulletin. With 56 recoveries, the number of those cured from the infection reached 5,82,710, the bulletin said.

 

Chandigarh reported four new cases of COVID-19, taking the total infection count to 61,978, according to the medical bulletin. No fatality was reported on Sunday. The death toll stands at 811, it said. The number of active cases in the city stands at 25, while 61,142 people have recovered from the infection, it added.

Tamil Nadu posts 1,956 new Covid cases, 28 fatalities

Tamil Nadu recorded a marginal drop in daily coronavirus cases with 1,956 new infections being reported in the last 24 hours, pushing the overall tally to 25.75 lakh. As many as 28 people have succumbed to the virus aggregating to 34,317, the health department said on Sunday.

 

Recoveries were lower compared to new cases, with 1,807 people getting discharged in the last 24 hours, mounting to 25,20,584 leaving 20,407 active infections, a medical bulletin said.

 

Tamil Nadu saw a high in the number of fresh infections with 1,997 cases reported on August 5 after witnessing a slight rise in daily cases. Since then the new infections have been on the decline. On August 6, the state added 1,985 new cases, while on August 7 it was 1,969.

Delhi reports 66 new COVID-19 cases, no death

As many as 66 new COVID-19 cases were reported on Sunday in the national capital. The positivity rate in the last 24 hours was recorded at 0.10 per cent.

 

As many as 95 persons have recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours, as compared to Saturday when 22 people were discharged post-recovery. With this, the total recoveries have gone up to 14,11,159.

 

As per the Delhi health bulletin, no death was recorded in the past 24 hours. The death toll reached 25,066 and case fatality rate currently is at 5.93 per cent. The number of active cases in Delhi now stands at 536 while the cumulative caseload has mounted to 14,36,761.

 

As many as 67,316 COVID-19 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours including 47,021 RT-PCR tests and 20,295 Rapid Antigen tests, taking the total number of tests conducted so far to 2,42,22,336.

Sikkim reports 114 new Covid-19 cases

Sikkim reported 114 fresh COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours pushing the coronavirus caseload to 27,860, a health department bulletin said on Sunday.
 

Of the new cases, 73 were registered in East Sikkim, followed by 28 in South Sikkim and 13 in West Sikkim.

45 cases of delta plus variant reported in Maharashtra so far: Govt

A total of 45 cases of the Delta plus variant of coronavirus have been reported in Maharashtra during genome sequencing, the state health department said on Sunday, adding one patient had died.
 

At 13, the maximum number of these patients hailed from Jalgaon in north Maharashtra followed by Ratnagiri (11) in the coastal Konkan region.

Telangana on Sunday reported 449 coronavirus cases taking the tally to over 6.49 lakh while the toll stood at 3825 with two more casualties.
 

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation accounted for the highest number ofcaseswith 73 followed by Karimnagar-52 district, a state government bulletin said.

The Himachal Pradesh High Court here mourned the death of 16 advocates, including the former chairman of the bar council, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
 

Acting Chief Justice Ravi Malimath and judges Tarlok Singh Chauhan, Sureshwar Thakur, Vivek Singh Thakur, Ajay Mohan Goel, Sandeep Sharma, Chander Bhusan Barowalia, Jyotsna Rewal Dua and Satyen Vaidya were present at a full court reference held in virtual mode for this purpose on Friday.

Delhi logs 66 Covid-19 cases, zero deaths in a day; positivity rate 0.10%

The national capital reported 66 Covid-19 cases and zero deaths due to the infection while the positivity rate stood at 0.10 per cent, according to data shared by the health department here on Sunday.
 

With the new cases, the tally of viral infection in the city so far has climbed to 14,36,761. Of this, over 14.11 lakh patients have recovered from the disease.

Pakistan airports unable to meet UAE's rapid PCR test requirement

Pakistan's airports are unable to meet the UAE's requirement of a rapid PCR test four hours prior to departure, Gulf News reported citing Pakistan civil aviation authority (PCAA) letter.
 

In a letter, the authority said that the relevant health authorities do not have a rapid PCR testing facility available at the airports - as a consequence, airline operators have been unable to board passengers on flights to Dubai.
