With 5,242 fresh Covid-19 cases, India recorded its biggest single-day jump in new infections on Monday. The tally of cases hit 96,169, including 3,029 deaths, according to the health ministry data.

As Covid-19 cases in the country near the 100,000-mark, 36,823 have recovered so far. India’s recovery rate is over 38 per cent. The fatality rate, however, is around 3.2 per cent.

Maharashtra, the worst-affected state by the pandemic, witnessed an explosion of new cases. With 2,347 new cases, the state’s tally reached 33,053. Of them, 1,198 have died, and 7,688 have recovered.

India has conducted a total of 2.3 million tests so far. The number of active patients currently is over 56,000.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in its latest testing strategy has said that no emergency procedure, including deliveries, should be delayed because of lack of testing. The sample, however, can be sent for testing if it matches any of the other criteria laid down by the ICMR.

The test is available to all hospitalised patients who develop influenza-like illness (ILI) symptoms, such as acute fever and cough. All symptomatic patients among returnees and migrants within 7 days of illness can access the testing facility. The ICMR had earlier said all symptomatic individuals with a history of international travel in the last 14 days, contacts of laboratory-confirmed cases, and health or frontline workers involved in containment and mitigation of Covid-19 are eligible for testing. All patients of severe acute respiratory infection too can send their samples for testing.
Asymptomatic direct and high-risk contacts of a confirmed case are also to be tested once between Day 5 and Day 10 of coming into contact.
