TN clocks 1,608 new cases, administers COVID-19 vaccines to 25 lakh people

Tamil Nadu on Sunday logged 1,608 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, registering a marginal decline in infections as against 1,639 on the previous day. The state's tally stood at 26.33 lakh cases so far.
 
With 22 deaths due to the infection, including 7 in private hospitals and 15 in government facilities, the toll has risen to 35,168. On Sunday, the government administered COVID-19 vaccines to 25 lakh people and set a Himalayan record in the country by giving 4 crore vaccines so far.

Goa sees 38 COVID-19 cases, 1 death, 74 recoveries

Goa's COVID-19 tally increased by 38 on Sunday to reach 1,74,837, while one death took the toll to 3,217, an official said.
 
The discharge of 74 people took the recovery count to 1,70,882, leaving the state with 738 active cases, he said.
 
With 2,677 samples being examined in the last 24 hours, the number of tests in Goa went up to 12,66,413, he added.
 
Goa's COVID-19 figures are as follows: positive cases 1,74,837, new cases 38, death toll 3217, discharged 170882, active cases 738, samples tested till date 12,66,413.

Mumbai reports 354 fresh COVID cases, 7 deaths

Mumbai reported 354 new COVID cases and 7 deaths on Sunday.
 
According to the state health department, 188 people have recovered from the disease. With this, the recovery rate of the state stood at 97 per cent.
 
The total number of positive COVID cases in the city stood at 73,5056 and as many as 4,823 active COVID cases were recorded.

Over 74 cr Covid vaccine jabs administered in India

All adult people in Sikkim, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Himachal Pradesh, Goa, Ladakh and Lakshadweep have received at least one dose of Covid vaccine as the cumulative jabs administered in the country crossed 74 crore on Sunday, the Union Health Ministry said.
 
Around 50,25,159 vaccine doses have been administered till 8 pm on Sunday, according to data from the CoWIN portal.
 
"Congratulations to these states and Union Territories for administering the first COVID-19 vaccine dose to 100 per cent of the adult population. Special appreciation for the health workers in these regions for their diligence and commitment, the office of Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya tweeted. PTI

Bengal reports higher single-day recoveries than fresh cases; death toll rises to 18,577

West Bengal's Nadia district reported four out of 10 single-day coronavirus fatalities on Sunday, as the state's death toll mounted to 18,577, a health department bulletin said.
 
Recoveries outnumbered daily COVID-19 cases with 751 new infections recorded as against 757 more patients getting discharged, it said.
 
The state's tally stands at 15,56,908.
 
The fresh cases include 125 infections from Kolkata and 124 in North 24 Parganas.
 
According to the bulletin, West Bengal now has 8,187 active cases, after a total of 15,30,144 people were discharged.
 
Altogether, 1,74,78,452 samples have been tested for COVID-19 so far, it added. PTI

Karnataka logs 803 new cases

Karnataka logged 803 new COVID-19 cases and 17 deaths on Sunday, taking the total number of infections to 29,61,735 and the toll to 37,504. The day also saw 802 discharges, taking the total number of recoveries in the state so far to 29,07,548.
 
Out of the 803 new cases reported on Sunday, 255 were from Bengaluru Urban, as the city saw 107 discharges and six deaths.
 
The total number of active cases in the state stood at 16,656.
 
While the positivity rate for the day was 0.80 per cent, the Case Fatality Rate (CFR) was 2.11 per cent.
 
Coming behind Bengaluru Urban in number of deaths was Dakshina Kannada, Belagavi, Hassan and Mysuru (2 each), followed by others.

22 new cases, zero death recorded in Delhi

No death due to COVID-19 was recorded in Delhi on Sunday, while 22 fresh cases were reported with a positivity rate of 0.04 per cent, according to data shared by the city health department.
 
Only one fatality due to Covid has been reported this month on September 7. The death toll due to the coronavirus infection in Delhi stands at 25,083.

12 Nagpur cops test positive after return from Pune training session

Twelve Nagpur police personnel have tested positive for coronavirus on Saturday and Sunday after returning from a training session at the Maharashtra Intelligence Academy in Pune, an official said.
 
A total of 33 personnel from Nagpur police had gone for the training, which took place between August 30 and September 9, said Sandip Pakhale, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) on Sunday.
 
"Two policemen, on returning from Pune, showed mild symptoms and their swab samples returned positive late Saturday night, after which we decided to test all 33 as a precautionary measure. Another 10 tested positive, taking the total to 12," he said. PTI

Video shows Covid-19 norm violations at Maha minister's event

A video that went viral on social media of an event attended by Maharashtra minister Dattatray Bharne in Indapur in Pune showed him and several of his supporters not maintaining social distance nor wearing masks, despite both being mandatory as per COVID-19 norms.
 
Bharne, the local Nationalist Congress Party MLA, was attending the inauguration of a new bank building in Pimpri Budruk village on Saturday, and the videos in circulation showed his supporters carrying him on their shoulders.
 
However, when contacted, Indapur police station Inspector T Mujawar on Sunday said no case was registered in this connection as no one had come forward to complain. PTI

20% of fully vaccinated people in Odisha fail to develop antibodies: ILS

The city-based Institute of Life Science (ILS) said about 20 per cent of the fully vaccinated people in Odisha have failed to develop antibodies against SARS-CoV2 and they may require booster doses.
 
Though Odisha has so far inoculated over 61.32 lakh people with both doses of COVID-19 vaccine, including more than 10 lakh people in Bhubaneswar, about 20 per cent of them have failed to develop antibodies against SARS-CoV2 and they may require booster doses, said ILS director Dr Ajay Parida.
 
"Though the antibody level is 30,000 to 40,000 in some Covid infected people, it is below 50 in a significant number of vaccinated individuals. If the antibody level is 60 to 100, then we can say the person is antibody positive," the ILS director said. PTI

Vaccination is the medicine to boost economy: FM

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday said vaccination was the only medicine to boost the economy as it allows people to conduct businesses regularly or farmers to carry out farming activity.
 
"Vaccination programme has been going on smoothly in the country and so far 73 crore people have already received jabs free of charge. Today, through vaccination programme, people were able to conduct business, traders were able to procure products to run businesses, (thereby) boosting economy, or farmers were able to do farming...So, vaccination is the only medicine (to combat the virus, to boost economy)...," she said. School bells ring in Bangladesh after 543 days

School bells rang after a hiatus of 543 days in Bangladesh on Sunday, as tens of thousands of students returned to classes, amid an ease in the coronavirus situation in the country and the vaccination programme picking up pace.
 
News channels aired footages of students in school uniform entering campuses with broad smiles, visible despite masks. Many reached their classes many hours in advance as excitement among students was palpable.

Zydus Cadila to seek approval for two-dose regimen of its approved vaccine in India

Considering the burden on healthcare and the expense of buying three doses, Zydus Cadila is planning to seek approval for the two-dose regimen of its needle-free COVID-19 vaccine, ZyCoV-D, days after the vaccine was approved by India's drugs regulator for emergency use in India on August 20. The trials for the two-dose regimen are underway.

Germany says coronavirus outbreak slowing

The spread of the coronavirus slowed in Germany on Sunday. The number of people newly infected rose by 7,345: some 3,108 cases less than a week ago. The death toll fell to eight on Sunday, compared with 21 a week ago. The country recorded in total 4,077,640 Covid-19 infections, Bloomberg reported.

Ladakh logs one new case in 24 hours

Ladakh recorded one new case of Covid-19 in 24 hours to take its total to 20,601, PTI reported quoting unnamed government officials. No death due to Covid was reported in 24 hours. Active cases have come down to 34.

Coronavirus live updates: India recorded 28,591 new cases of Covid-19 and 338 deaths from the disease in 24 hours, said the health ministry on Sunday.
 
The new data increased total cases to 33.23 million and fatalities to 442,655.

Covid-19 affected the country but economic recovery was faster than the damage, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday.

Uttar Pradesh said on Saturday it had recorded 14 new cases of Covid-19 in 24 hours and no death, attributing vaccinations for the pandemic slowing down. About 48 per cent population of India’s largest state is vaccinated.

World coronavirus updates: China’s National Health Commission sent a special team to a city in eastern Fujian province after Covid-19 cases were reported, Bloomberg reported.

Hundreds of people gathered in Istanbul to protest against the government’s vaccination campaign and other measures to contain the coronavirus pandemic, including the requirement to wear facemasks in all public areas.

Soccer’s international governing body cleared players from Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Paraguay to turn out for their Premier League clubs this weekend.
