Rapes and cheating cases topped the crime profile of Andhra Pradesh in the calendar year 2013 even as crime against women in general was found to be rising faster than other crimes in the state.
Of the 11 heads of crime under which a total of 1,88,340 cases were registered by the police till November, rape and cheating cases increased over 20 per cent. Cases of the non-descriptive 'Other IPC' category, representing 41 per cent of the total criminal cases booked during the period, rose 14.78 per cent compared with same period previous year.
Crime against women increased 15.11 per cent to 25,998 cases (22,585 cases previous year). Of these, cases of 'outraging of modesty' grew 47.19 per cent (5,624 cases). Crime against women was growing far more year-on-year when compared with the 12.94 per cent increase in the overall number of the cognisable crimes registered in the state, according to crime statistics released by the state police on Tuesday.
However, there was a substantial decrease in extremist crime - 35 per cent - this year up to November, according to Director General of Police B Prasada Rao. Murders and counterfeiting were the only two other types of crimes that showed a decline during the period.
