The gangrape of a photojournalist in Mumbai has again raised serious concerns over safety of women in the country.
In 2012, 23 out of 35 states and union territories (UTs) in India saw a rise in rate of registered crime cases against women, which includes rape, sexual harassment and molestation.
Daman and Diu topped the charts but that was because of a low base in the preceding year. New Delhi, which was in the news recently on the account of the December 16 gang rape case, stood at the 12th position after West Bengal.
On the other hand, Karnataka saw the steepest decline by 59%, however, the number of cases still remained high at 3,699 in the state.
