The Congress working committee, (CWC), the highest decision making body of the Congress, which took place in the backdrop of the pullout of the Trinamool Congress from the UPA, today gave its full backing to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the economic reforms of the government.
Chairing the meeting Congress President Sonia Gandhi is reported to have reiterated that, “There is no threat to the government, it is stable.” Thereby, sending a message not just to the party’s rank and file but also outside that the UPA would be in the hotseat till 2014.
Attacking the Opposition BJP for playing "negative politics", Sonia Gandhi urged the the BJP to play the role of responsible opposition.
Stressing the need to implement economic reforms even at the cost of losing valuable allies like the TMC, the Prime Minister told the CWC that UPA flagship programmes both existing and the ones that it is keen to introduce cannot be implemented effectively till economy is in a sound position.
These decisions emanating from the CWC are an indication that the Congress President and the party are resolutely supporting the government as it unleashes bold economic measures which have even come in for criticism as it is threatened the very existence of the government at the Centre. The SP and the BSP’s backing of the UPA from outside has bolstered its confidence.
