Cyclone Amphan LIVE updates: The central government will give West Bengal Rs 1,000 crore and Rs 500 crore to Odisha as interim assistance for the damage caused by Cyclone Amphan, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday after a visit to the two states.

Families of those killed will get Rs 2 lakh each as ex-gratia and the injured will get Rs 50,00, he said after flying over flooded areas of West Bengal. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said 80 people have died in the cyclone and requested Modi to treat it as a national disaster.

The India Meteorological Department said squalls with wind speed at 30- 40 kmph are "very likely" in Meghalaya and west Assam in the next 12 hours.

Cyclone Amphan hits Covid testing in Bengal

The number of samples tested for COVID-19 in West Bengal almost halved over the last two days, as most technicians could not reach laboratories making their way through thousands of trees and electric poles that lay scattered across the state, owing to the impact of Cyclone Amphan, a senior official said. EU announces initial funding of 500,000 euro

The European Union has announced an initial funding of 500,000 euro for cyclone Amphan-affected people in India. Cyclone Amphan has left 80 people dead and thousands homeless in West Bengal, battering several parts of the state. It also wreaked havoc in Odisha damaging power and telecom infrastructure in several coastal districts. "The EU will address immediate needs of people affected by the cyclone, as well as protect humanitarian aid and health workers from their exposure to the epidemic," EU Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarcic said in a statement.

Telecom networks operating at 65-70 per cent capacity in affected districts, says COAI

Telecom networks continued to operate at 65-70 per cent capacity on the third day after super cyclone Amphan wreaked havoc in coastal districts of West Bengal, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) said on Friday. Continuous power outages, frequent fibre cuts and electricity wires on roads have made restoration of telecom networks a challenging task, COAI said. The Indian Air Force has readied 25 aircraft and 31 choppers for relief operations in areas affected by Cyclone Amphan, the IAF said Friday. "The aircraft/helicopters were modified with required equipment for undertaking relief operations and are on standby with crew for a quick deployment at various IAF bases," it said in a statement.
