Cyclone in Mumbai: Heavy rains continued to lash parts of Maharashtra, Gujarata on Thursday causing waterlogging in areas after Cyclone Nisarga changed direction slightly and made a landfall near Alibaug, about 110 km from Mumbai, in a huge relief to the country's financial centre already reeling under the Covid-19 pandemic. Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray asked officials to complete panchnamas or inspection reports of losses due to cyclone Nisarga in Raigad district within two days. The Chief Minister also announced Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia to the kin of the deceased.

Police and civic officials said six people died  and 16 were injured in cyclone-related incidents as the storm slammed the coastal districts of Maharashtra from Arabian sea with wind speeds of up to 120 kilometres per hour(kmph) in the afternoon. Mumbai remained on edge as it braced for the cyclone after a gap of 72 years.

Nisarga had weakened into a 'cyclonic storm' in the evening and by night further weakened into a deep depression and now lay over north-central Maharashtra, said the latest bulletin by the India Meteorological Department(IMD). The wind speed has reduced considerably to 25 kmph, it said.

Rainy Thursday in Mumbai in cyclone's aftermath

The island city and suburban areas of Mumbai received nearly 50-mm of rain in eight hours on Thursday, a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) release said. The rain followed Cyclone Nisarga which made landfall in neighbouring Raigad district on Wednesday. Colaba weather station recorded 49.6 mm rain while Santacruz station recorded 47 mm rain between 8.30 am to 5.30 pm.

Procured wheat feared damaged due to rain in Madhya Pradesh

Wheat procured by the government from farmers and lying in the open is feared to have been damaged due to the rains in Madhya Pradesh. While the state government admitted that grains were stored in the open at some procurement centres, opposition Congress blamed it for carelessness despite receiving cyclone warning. Forty-six out of 52 districts of Madhya Pradesh recorded rains as a result of cyclone Nisarga on Wednesday and Thursday.

Restoration work begins in Raigad post Cyclone Nisarga

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force and local authorities on Thursday started restoration work in Maharashtra's Raigad district that has borne the brunt of cyclonic storm 'Nisarga'. The cyclone made landfall near Shrivardhan in the district on Wednesday afternoon and lashed the coastal areas of Alibaug, Revdanda, Revas, Murud, Mhasala and Roha with strong winds and heavy rains.

Ajit Pawar reviews damage caused by cyclone in Pune district

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Thursday reviewed damage caused by cyclone Nisarga in Pune and instructed district administration to conduct immediate spot inspections to assess the quantum of losses. According to an official statement, Pawar, also guardian minister of Pune, interacted with local public representatives and officials to know details regarding the losses caused in urban and rural parts of the Western Maharashtra district.

Two people died due to to rain-related incidents in Maharashtra due to Cyclone Nisagra that weakened to a cyclonic storm on Thursday, while some areas in northern states of the country witnessed rainfall. The cyclone, which weakened into a low pressure area, is likely to enter Madhya Pradesh by Thursday evening from the southern parts of the state, instead of the western parts as predicted earlier, an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

 

IMD officials said that the cyclone has weakened into a cyclonic storm before entering Madhya Pradesh, and is likely to lose its intensity further. As parts of Nashik received heavy rainfall, a 45-year-old woman died of electrocution in a rain-related incident when she entered an inundated poultry farm. A 35-year-old man, who was severely injured in an incident of wall collapse in Pune, died at a hospital.

 

Nisarga and its accompanying rains seem to have had a positive impact on Mumbai's overall air quality index, which improved to 17, the best reading for this year as of now.

Authorities started restoration work in Raigad district that borne the brunt of cyclonic storm. Several kutcha houses, temporary shades were destroyed, while hundreds of trees and many electrical poles were uprooted and roofs of some structures were blown away by the storm, an official said.

Several parts of Gujarat received copious rain during the last 24 hours due the severe cyclonic storm 'Nisarga', which brushed past the state's southern coast without causing large-scale damage on Wednesday. As predicted by the Meteorological Centre here, parts of south Gujarat along with the Saurashtra region received considerable rain during the last 24 hours.

 

In a release on Thursday, the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) said Dharampur taluka of Valsad district received 78 mm of rainfall, the highest in Gujarat.

 

Dharampur was followed by Ahwa taluka of Dang district (75 mm), Nizar of Tapi (65), Subir of Dang (60), Waghai of Dang (46), Kotda-Sangani of Rajkot (36), Kaprada of Valsad (36) and Thangadh of Surendranagar district (31), it said. During the day, light to moderate showers were reported from several districts, including Amreli, Bhavnagar and Kutch.

Complete cyclone damage reports in two days, restore power: Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday asked officials to complete panchnamas or inspection reports of losses due to cyclone Nisarga in Raigad district within two days. Speaking at a video conference to take a stock of damage caused by the cyclone in the coastal district which is adjacent to Mubai, Thackeray also directed that electricity supply be restored quickly.

 

Six people died in Maharashtra due to cyclone-related incidents and 16 were injured, while six cattle were also killed, said a statement from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO). Crops, trees or houses over 5,033 hectares of land were also damaged, it added.

 

Thackeray directed the authorities to provide aid of Rs 4 lakh to the kin of those killed, the CMO statement said, adding that he asked for panchnamas to be completed in two daysso that assistance can be provided to farmers and others. Mahavitaran, the electricity distribution company was asked to restore electricity supply by repairing the electricity poles damaged by the cyclone.

Cyclone Nisarga LIVE: NCP MP says cyclone caused Rs 5,000-crore damage; seeks aid

Cyclone Nisarga has caused roughly Rs 5,000 crore worth of damage in Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts of Maharashtra, NCP MP Sunil Tatkare said on Thursday and asked the state government to announce a special economic package for the coastal region. Tatkare made the appeal for financial assistance to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and his deputy Ajit Pawar, who belongs to the NCP.

 

The Lok Sabha MP from Raigad submitted a memorandum in this regard to NCP president Sharad Pawar too, a statement said. The Parliamentarian said the cyclone made landfall in Murud in Raigad and caused large-scale damage to properties in the district, besides Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg.

 

As per initial information, losses of around Rs 5,000 crore have been caused. Hence, the government should carry out a survey and declare a special economic package for the affected people from the region, the NCP leader demanded.

LIVE: Cyclone Nisarga: Need to harmonise with nature, says Goa Governor Satya Pal Malik

Citing the destruction caused by 'Cyclone Nisarga' on India's west coast, Goa Governor Satya Pal Malik on Thursday, in his message on the eve of World Environment Day, called for a need to respect nature and harmonise human lives in sync with it.

 

"Recently the 'Cyclone Nisarga', which made landfall in the western coast of India, left a trail of destruction in coastal states including Goa after gusty winds and heavy rain damaged trees and homes across these states," Malik said on the eve of World Environment Day. "When the nature turns hostile, there is absolutely no place where life can hide. The nature's fury is inescapable. Therefore we all must respect nature and our environment and try to harmonise our life with it," Malik said.

 

The Governor said that due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the decrease in carbon dioxide emissions, the balance between humans and nature had been restored to some extent.

Amid cyclone Nisarga and coronavirus, Mumbai cop saves minor girl's life

At the height of the Covid-19 crisis coupled with cyclone Nisarga, a Mumbai policeman helped save the life of a minor girl who underwent a critical heart operation, an official said here on Thursday. It was on June 3 when a 14-year old girl, Sana F. Khan was required to undergo an open heart surgery at the Hinduja Hospital.

 

"She was in urgent need of the A+ blood group during the open heart procedure. However, owing to the cyclone Nisarga dislocation and the Covid-19 restrictions, no eligible person was able to reach the hospital to donate blood," said the official.

 

When Akash Babasaheb Gaikwad, a policeman, learnt about this he rushed to the hospital and volunteered to help out. Gaikwad was taken inside the hospital and after the necessary tests, his blood matched, thus helping save the patient's life. When informed about this, Home Minister Anil Deshmukh called up Gaikwad and lavished praise on him for adhering to the police motto of 'Sadrakshanaya' in the hour of crisis.
