DATA STORY: Biggest net daily jump of 35,498 takes India's active Covid cases past 500,000

India on Monday reported a net increase of 35,498 in active coronavirus cases, the most in a day so far, to take its count to 521,808. That is 51.27 per cent of the September 18 peak of 1,017,754. India’s share of global active coronavirus cases now stands at 2.37 per cent (one in 42). The country is 6^th among the most affected countries by active cases. On Monday, it added 68,020 cases, the most in a day since October 12, to take its total caseload to 12,039,644. And, with 291 new fatalities, its Covid-19 death toll reached 161,843, or 1.35 per cent of total confirmed infections.

 
With 260,653 more people getting Covid-19 vaccine shots on Sunday, India’s total count of those inoculated reached 60,530,435. The count of recovered coronavirus cases across India, meanwhile, reached 11,355,993 – or 94.32 per cent of total caseload – with 32,231 new cured cases being reported on Monday.
 

• With a daily increase of 68,020 in total cases, the most in a day since October 11, India’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen from 11,971,624 on Sunday to 12,039,644 – an increase of 0.5%. Death toll has reached 161,843, with 291 fatalities in a day. Now the sixth-most-affected country by active cases, fourth by fatality, third by total, and second by recovered cases, India has added 393,563 cases in the past 7 days.
• India now accounts for 2.37% of all active cases globally (one in every 42 active cases), and 5.79% of all deaths (one in every 17 deaths).
• India has so far vaccinated 60,530,435 people. That is 502.78 per cent of its total caseload, and 4.3547 per cent of its population.
• Among Indian states, the top 5 in terms of number of vaccine shots administered are Maharashtra (10469873), Rajasthan (10237168), Uttar Pradesh (9957147), Gujarat (9112095), and West Bengal (8989654).
• Backwards from here, the last 1 million cases for India have come in 33 days.
• The count of active cases across India saw a net increase of 35,498 on Monday, the most in a day so far, compared with 33,663 on Sunday. States that have seen the biggest daily net increase in active cases are Maharashtra (22432). Karnataka (1785), Chhattisgarh (1403), Madhya Pradesh (1190), and Uttar Pradesh (1025).
• With 32,231 new daily recoveries, India’s recovery rate stands at 94.32%, while fatality rate has come down marginally to 1.34%.
• The Indian states and UTs with the worst case fatality rates at present are Punjab (2.89%), Sikkim (2.17%), and Maharashtra (2.00%). The rate in as many as 15 is higher than the national average.
• India’s new daily closed cases stand at 32,522 — 291 deaths and 32,231 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 0.90%.
• India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 0.5%.
• India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 122.3 days, and for deaths at 385.2 days.
• Overall, five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Maharashtra (40414), Karnataka (3082), Punjab (2870), Madhya Pradesh (2276), and Gujarat (2270).
• Among states with more than 25,000 cases, the five with worst recovery rates at present are Maharashtra (85.95%), Punjab (86.79%), Chandigarh (88.51%), Chhattisgarh (93.14%), and Madhya Pradesh (93.72%).
• India on Sunday conducted 913,319 coronavirus tests to take the total count of tests conducted so far in the country to 241,864,161. The test positivity rate recorded was 7.4%.
• Five states with the highest test positivity rate (TPR) – percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for Covid-19 infection (by cumulative data for tests and cases – are Maharashtra (14.02%), Goa (10.68%), Ladakh (9.06%), Nagaland (9%), and Kerala (8.59%).
• Five states with the highest TPR by daily numbers for tests and cases added – are Maharashtra (24.41%), Chandigarh (13.13%), Madhya Pradesh (8.93%), Chhattisgarh (8.72%), and Punjab (7.68%).
• Among states and UTs with more than 10 million population, five that have carried out the highest number of tests (per million population) are Delhi (726912), J&K (370491), Kerala (370491), Karnataka (320808), and Andhra Pradesh (287050).
• The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (2713875), Kerala (1117993), Karnataka (987012), Andhra Pradesh (898815), and Tamil Nadu (879473).
• Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported 40,414 new cases to take its tally to 2713875. The state has added 317,535 cases in the past 10 days.
• Kerala, the second-most-affected state by total tally, has added 2,216 cases to take its tally to 1117993.
• Karnataka, the third-most-affected state, has reported 308 cases to take its tally to 987012.
• Andhra Pradesh has added 1005 cases to take its tally to 898815.
• Tamil Nadu has seen its tally going up by 2194 to 879473.
• Delhi has added 1881 cases to take its tally to 657715.
• Uttar Pradesh has added 1395 cases to take its tally to 613798.
