DATA STORY: Global active Covid cases top 20 mn; India's share down to 1.78%

India on Saturday reported a net reduction of 3,930 to bring its count of active coronavirus cases down to 359,819, the lowest level since July 18. With a continuous trend of daily reductions, India’s share of global active coronavirus cases is down to 1.78 per cent (one in 55), even as the total number of active cases globally has gone past the 20-million mark. The country added 30,006 to take its total caseload to 9,826,775. And with 442 new fatalities being reported in a day, its Covid-19 death toll reached 142,628, or 1.45 per cent of total confirmed infections.
 

The count of recovered coronavirus cases across India now stands at 9,324,328 – or 94.89 per cent of total caseload – with 33,494 new cured cases being reported on Saturday.
 
Now the ninth-most-affected country by active cases, third by fatalities, and second by total cases, India has added 218,564 cases in the past seven days. Here are the key takeaways from the coronavirus data released by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) on Saturday (December 12, 2020):
 

• With a daily increase of 30,006 in total cases, India’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen from 9,796,769 on Friday to 9,826,775 – an increase of 0.3%. Death toll has reached 142,628, with 442 fatalities in a day. The seventh-most-affected country by active cases, third by fatality, and second by total cases, India has added 218,564 cases in the past 7 days.
• India now accounts for 1.78% of all active cases globally (one in every 56 active cases), and 8.88% of all deaths (one in every 11 deaths).
• Backwards from here, the last 1 million cases for India have come in 27 days.
• The count of active cases across India has seen a net decline of 3930, compared with 8544 on Friday. The states that have reported the highest increase in active cases are Maharashtra (1407), Uttarakhand (192), Telangana (66), Bihar (28), and Manipur (28).
• With 33,494 new daily recoveries, India’s recovery rate has improved to 94.89%; the fatality rate remains unchanged at 1.45%.
• The Indian states and UTs with the worst case fatality rates at present are Punjab (3.17%), Maharashtra (2.57%), and Gujarat (2.23%). The rate in as many as 13 is higher than the national average.
• India’s new daily closed cases stand at 33,936 — 442 deaths and 33,494 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 1.30%.
• India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 0.3%.
• India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 226.7 days, and for deaths at 223.3 days.
• Overall, five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Kerala (4642), Maharashtra (4268), West Bengal (2753), Delhi (2385), and Uttar Pradesh (1561).
• Among states with more than 25,000 cases, the five with worst recovery rates at present are Himachal Pradesh (82.38%), Manipur (87.65%), Kerala (90.57%), Uttarakhand (91.04%), and Chhattisgarh (91.57%).
• India on Friday conducted 1,065,176 coronavirus tests, taking the total count of tests conducted so far in the country to 152,697,399. The test positivity rate recorded was 2.8%.
• Five states with the highest test positivity rate (TPR) – percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for Covid-19 infection (by cumulative data for tests and cases) – are Maharashtra (16.18%), Goa (13.39%), Chandigarh (11.67%), Nagaland (10.0%), and Kerala (9.6%).
• Five states with the highest TPR by daily numbers for tests and cases added – are Nagaland (9.82%), Himachal Pradesh (8.93%), Kerala (8.68%), Manipur (7.95%), and West Bengal (6.53%).
• Among states and UTs with more than 10 million population, five that have carried out the highest number of tests (per million population) are Delhi (357180), J&K (249489), Andhra Pradesh (204891), Kerala (195357), and Karnataka (184878).
• The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (1872440), Karnataka (899011), Andhra Pradesh (874515), Tamil Nadu (796475), and Kerala (658683).
• Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported a net addition of 4,268 cases. The state has added 43,614 cases in the past 10 days.
• Karnataka, the second-most-affected state, has reported 1,210 cases to take its tally to 899,011.
• Andhra Pradesh, the third-most-affected state by total cases, added 520 cases to take its tally to 874,515.
• Kerala has added 4,642 cases to take its tally to 658,683.
• Tamil Nadu has seen its tally going up by 1,235 to 796,475.
• Uttar Pradesh has added 1,561 cases to take its tally to 562,722.
• Delhi has added 2,385 cases to take its tally to 603,535.
