DATA STORY: In a first, India reports more than 400,000 Covid cases in a day

India on Saturday reported a net increase of 98,482 in active coronavirus cases to take its count to 3,268,710. India’s share of global active coronavirus cases now stands at 17.26 per cent (one in 6). The country is second among the most affected countries by active cases. On Saturday, it added 401,993 cases, the most in a day yet, to take its total caseload to 19,164,969. And, with 3,523 new fatalities, its Covid-19 death toll reached 211,853, or 1.11 per cent of total confirmed infections.
 
With 2,744,485 more Covid-19 vaccine doses being administered on Friday, India’s total count of vaccine shots so far reached 154,989,635. The count of recovered coronavirus cases across India, meanwhile, reached 15,684,406 – or 81.84 per cent of total caseload – with 299,988 new cured cases being reported on Saturday.
 
  • With a daily increase of 401,993 in total cases, the most in a day yet, India’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen from 18,762,976 on Friday to 19,164,969 – an increase of 2.1%. Death toll has reached 211,853, with 3,523 fatalities. Now the second-most-affected country by active cases, total cases and recovery, and fourth by death, India has added 2,554,488 cases in the past 7 days.
  • India now accounts for 17.26% of all active cases globally (one in every 6 active cases), and 6.63% of all deaths (one in every 16 deaths).
  • India has so far administered 154,989,635 vaccine doses. That is 808.71 per cent of its total caseload, and 11.14 per cent of its population.
  • Among Indian states, the top 5 in terms of number of vaccine shots administered are Maharashtra (20321999), Rajasthan (17566957), Uttar Pradesh (16823215), Gujarat (16008538), and West Bengal (14756305).
  • Among states with more than 10 million population, the top 5 in number of vaccine shots per one million population are Kerala (271788), Gujarat (250633), Chhattisgarh (233642), Uttarakhand (228175), and Delhi (223503).

  • The count of active cases across India on Saturday saw a net increase of 98,482, compared with 85,414 on Friday. States that have seen the biggest daily net increase in active cases are Karnataka (33195), Kerala (19650), Andhra Pradesh (8822), Rajasthan (6966), and Bihar (4579).
  • With 299,988 new daily recoveries, India’s recovery rate stands at 81.84%, while fatality rate remains unchanged at 1.11%.
  • The Indian states and UTs with the worst case fatality rates at present are Punjab (2.43%), Sikkim (1.85%), and Himachal Pradesh (1.51%). The rate in as many as 15 is higher than the national average.
  • India’s new daily closed cases stand at 303,511 — 3,523 deaths and 299,988 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 1.16%.
  • India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 2.1%.
  • India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 32.7 days, and for deaths at 41.3 days.
  • Overall, five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Maharashtra (62919), Karnataka (48296), Kerala (37199), Uttar Pradesh (34372), and Delhi (27047).
  • Among states with more than 25,000 cases, the five with worst recovery rates at present are Rajasthan (69.78%), Uttarakhand (71.13%), Goa (73.52%), Gujarat (73.72%), and Karnataka (73.85%).
  • India on Friday conducted 1,945,299 coronavirus tests to take the total count of tests conducted so far in the country to 288,337,385. The test positivity rate recorded was 20.7%.
  • Five states with the highest test positivity rate (TPR) – percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for Covid-19 infection (by cumulative data for tests and cases – are Maharashtra (16.98%), Goa (13.95%), Chandigarh (10.54%), Dadra & Nagar Haveli-Daman & Diu (10.36%), and Chhattisgarh (10.11%).
  • Five states with the highest TPR by daily numbers for tests and cases added – are Goa (44.75%), West Bengal (32.7%), Delhi (32.69%), Nagaland (30.25%), and Haryana (27.65%).
  • Among states and UTs with more than 10 million population, five that have carried out the highest number of tests (per million population) are Delhi (916672), J&K (534202), Kerala (442571), Karnataka (378863), and Uttarakhand (339283).
  • The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (4602472), Kerala (1571183), Karnataka (1523142), Uttar Pradesh (1252324), and Tamil Nadu (1166756).
  • Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported 62,919 new cases to take its tally to 4602472. The state has added 642,113 cases in the past 10 days.
  • Kerala, the second-most-affected state by total tally, has added 37,199 cases to take its tally to 1571183.
  • Karnataka, the third-most-affected state, has reported 48,296 cases to take its tally to 1523142.
  • Uttar Pradesh has added 34,372 cases to take its tally to 1252324.
  • Tamil Nadu has added 18,692 cases to take its tally to 1166756.
  • Delhi has added 27,047 cases to take its tally to 1149333.
  • Andhra Pradesh has seen its tally going up by 17,354 to 1101690.
