DATA STORY: India adds 161,736 Covid cases in a day, reports 879 deaths

India on Tuesday reported a net increase of 63,689 in active coronavirus cases to take its count to 1,264,698, the most at any time since the outbreak early last year. India’s share of global active coronavirus cases now stands at 5.30 per cent (one in 19). The country is 3rd among the most affected countries by active cases. On Tuesday, it added 161,736 cases to take its total caseload to 13,689,453. And, with 879 new fatalities, its Covid-19 death toll reached 171,058, or 1.25 per cent of total confirmed infections.
 
With 4,004,521 more people getting Covid-19 vaccine shots on Monday, India’s total count of those inoculated reached 108,533,085. The count of recovered coronavirus cases across India, meanwhile, reached 12,253,697 – or 89.51 per cent of total caseload – with 97,168 new cured cases being reported on Tuesday.

 

• With a daily increase of 161,736 in total cases, India’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen from 13,527,717 on Monday to 13,689,453 – an increase of 1.2%. Death toll has reached 171,058, with 879 fatalities in a day. Now the third-most-affected country by active cases, fourth by death, and second by total and recovered cases, India has added 1,003,404 cases in the past 7 days.
• India now accounts for 5.30% of all active cases globally (one in every 19 active cases), and 5.75% of all deaths (one in every 17 deaths).
• India has so far vaccinated 108,533,085 people. That is 792.82 per cent of its total caseload, and 7.8049 per cent of its population.
• Among Indian states, the top 5 in terms of number of vaccine shots administered are Maharashtra (15273213), Rajasthan (14678565), Uttar Pradesh (14013269), Gujarat (13452531), and West Bengal (12350244).
• Among states with more than 10 million population, the top 5 in number of vaccine shots per one million population are Kerala (214478), Gujarat (210616), Chhattisgarh (199441), Rajasthan (181144), and Delhi (174762).

• The count of active cases across India on Tuesday saw a net increase of 63,689, compared with 92,922 on Monday. States that have seen the biggest daily net increase in active cases are Uttar Pradesh (10335), Chhattisgarh (8579), Karnataka (6760), Rajasthan (4455), and Tamil Nadu (4353).
• With 97,168 new daily recoveries, India’s recovery rate stands at 89.51%, while fatality rate has come down marginally to 1.25%.
• The Indian states and UTs with the worst case fatality rates at present are Punjab (2.74%), Sikkim (2.12%), and Maharashtra (1.68%). The rate in as many as 15 is higher than the national average.
• India’s new daily closed cases stand at 98,047 — 879 deaths and 97,168 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 0.90%.
• India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 1.2%.
• India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 58.3 days, and for deaths at 134.5 days.
• Overall, five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Maharashtra (51751), Uttar Pradesh (13604), Chhattisgarh (13576), Delhi (11491), and Karnataka (9579).
• Among states with more than 25,000 cases, the five with worst recovery rates at present are Chhattisgarh (77.26%), Maharashtra (81.94%), Uttar Pradesh (87.13%), Punjab (87.18%), and Madhya Pradesh (87.56%).
• India on Monday conducted 1,400,122 coronavirus tests to take the total count of tests conducted so far in the country to 259,207,108. The test positivity rate recorded was 11.6%.
• Five states with the highest test positivity rate (TPR) – percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for Covid-19 infection (by cumulative data for tests and cases – are Maharashtra (15.5%), Goa (10.93%), Ladakh (9.91%), Chandigarh (9.06%), and Nagaland (8.95%).
• Five states with the highest TPR by daily numbers for tests and cases added – are Chhattisgarh (29.51%), Maharashtra (24.88%), Rajasthan (21.93%), Goa (20.9%), and Himachal Pradesh (17.16%).
• Among states and UTs with more than 10 million population, five that have carried out the highest number of tests (per million population) are Delhi (836444), J&K (480435), Kerala (386960), Karnataka (337559), and Andhra Pradesh (286868).
• The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (3458996), Kerala (1172882), Karnataka (1074869), Tamil Nadu (940145), and Andhra Pradesh (928664).
• Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported 51,751 new cases to take its tally to 3458996. The state has added 554,920 cases in the past 10 days.
• Kerala, the second-most-affected state by total tally, has added 5,692 cases to take its tally to 1172882.
• Karnataka, the third-most-affected state, has reported 9,579 cases to take its tally to 1074869.
• Tamil Nadu has added 6711 cases to take its tally to 940145.
• Andhra Pradesh has seen its tally going up by 3263 to 928664.
• Delhi has added 11,491 cases to take its tally to 736688.
• Uttar Pradesh has added 13,604 cases to take its tally to 705619.
