DATA STORY: India has seen net increase of 23,358 to active Covid cases in 10 days

India on Thursday reported a net increase of 3,287 to take its count of active coronavirus cases to 173,413. That is a level seen on June 22, 2020, and then again on January 28, 2021, and that is 82.96 per cent lower than the September 18 peak of 1,017,754. India’s share of global active coronavirus cases now stands at 0.80 per cent (one in 125). The country is 13^th among the most affected countries by active cases. On Thursday, it added 17,407 cases, the most in a day since January 29, to take its total caseload to 11,156,923. And, with 89 new fatalities, its Covid-19 death toll reached 157,435, or 1.41 per cent of total confirmed infections.

 
With 994,452 more people getting Covid-19 vaccine shots on Wednesday, India’s total count of those inoculated reached 16,616,048. The count of recovered coronavirus cases across India, meanwhile, reached 10,826,075 – or 97.03 per cent of total caseload – with 14,031 new cured cases being reported on Thursday.
 

• With a daily increase of 17,407 in total cases, India’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen from 11,139,516 on Wednesday to 11,156,923 – an increase of 0.2%. Death toll has reached 157,435, with 89 fatalities in a day. Now the thirteenth-most-affected country by active cases, fourth by fatality, and second by total and recovered cases, India has added 110,009 cases in the past 7 days.
• India now accounts for 0.80% of all active cases globally (one in every 125active cases), and 6.12% of all deaths (one in every 16 deaths).
• India has so far vaccinated 16,616,048 people. That is 148.93 per cent of its total caseload, and 1.1962 per cent of its population.
• Backwards from here, the last 1 million cases for India have come in 69 days.
• The count of active cases across India saw a net increase of 3,287 on Thursday, compared with 1,768 on Tuesday. States that have seen the biggest daily net increase in active cases are Maharashtra (3254), Punjab (395), Rajasthan (130), Chhattisgarh (125), and Madhya Pradesh (124).
• With 14,031 new daily recoveries, India’s recovery rate has reached 97.03%, while fatality rate remains unchanged at 1.41%.
• The Indian states and UTs with the worst case fatality rates at present are Punjab (3.19%), Maharashtra (2.40%), and Gujarat (2.20%). The rate in as many as 15 is higher than the national average.
• India’s new daily closed cases stand at 14,120 — 89 deaths and 14,031 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 0.63%.
• India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 0.1%.
• India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 443.9 days, and for deaths at 1,225.8 days.
• Overall, five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Maharashtra (9855), Kerala (2765), Punjab (772), Karnataka (528), and Tamil Nadu (489).
• Among states with more than 25,000 cases, the five with worst recovery rates at present are Maharashtra (93.77%), Punjab (93.78%), Kerala (95.26%), Madhya Pradesh (97.35%), and Gujarat (97.40%).
• India on Wednesday conducted 775,631 coronavirus tests to take the total count of tests conducted so far in the country to 219,178,908. The test positivity rate recorded was 2.2%.
• Five states with the highest test positivity rate (TPR) – percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for Covid-19 infection (by cumulative data for tests and cases) – are Maharashtra (13.2%), Goa (11.08%), Nagaland (9.32%), Kerala (9.16%), and Ladakh (8.92%).
• Five states with the highest TPR by daily numbers for tests and cases added – are Maharashtra (11.25%), Kerala (4.64%), Goa (4.08%), Chandigarh (3.48%), and Punjab (2.8%).
• Among states and UTs with more than 10 million population, five that have carried out the highest number of tests (per million population) are Delhi (633688), J&K (399996), Kerala (331673), Karnataka (288603), and Andhra Pradesh (268995).
• The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (2179185), Kerala (1067044), Karnataka (952565), Andhra Pradesh (890215), and Tamil Nadu (852967).
• Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported 9,855 new cases to take its tally to 2179185. The state has added 78,301 cases in the past 10 days.
• Kerala, now the second-most-affected state by total tally, has added 2765 cases to take its tally to 1067044.
• Karnataka, the third-most-affected state, has reported 528 cases to take its tally to 952565.
• Andhra Pradesh has added 135 cases to take its tally to 890215.
• Tamil Nadu has seen its tally going up by 489 to 852967.
• Delhi has added 240 cases to take its tally to 639921.
• Uttar Pradesh has added 77 cases to take its tally to 603788.
