DATA STORY: India reports 4,529 Covid deaths, most in a day so far

India has so far administered 185,809,302 vaccine doses. That is 744.28 per cent of its total caseload, and 13.35 per cent of its population

India on Wednesday reported a net reduction of 127,046 in active coronavirus cases to take its count to 3,226,719. India’s share of global active coronavirus cases now stands at 19.68 per cent (one in 5). The country is second among the most affected countries by active cases. On Wednesday, it added 267,334 cases to take its total caseload to 25,496,330. And, with 4,529 new fatalities, its Covid-19 death toll reached 283,248, or 1.11 per cent of total confirmed infections.
 
With 1,312,155 more Covid-19 vaccine doses being administered on Tuesday, India’s total count of vaccine shots so far reached 185,809,302. The count of recovered coronavirus cases across India, meanwhile, reached 21,986,363 – or 86.26 per cent of total caseload – with 389,851 new cured cases being reported on Wednesday.
 
  • With a daily increase of 267,334 in total cases, India’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen from 25,228,996 on Tuesday to 25,496,330 – an increase of 1.1%. Death toll has reached 283,248, with 4,529 fatalities. Now the second-most-affected country by active cases, total cases and recovery, and fourth by death, India has added 2,155,392 cases in the past 7 days.
  • India now accounts for 19.69% of all active cases globally (one in every 5 active cases), and 8.15% of all deaths (one in every 12 deaths).
  • India has so far administered 185,809,302 vaccine doses. That is 744.28 per cent of its total caseload, and 13.35 per cent of its population.
  • Among Indian states, the top 5 in terms of number of vaccine shots administered are Maharashtra (24683649), Rajasthan (20152786), Uttar Pradesh (19861356), Gujarat (18817857), and West Bengal (16815054).
  • Among states with more than 10 million population, the top 5 in number of vaccine shots per one million population are Delhi (311836), Kerala (310775), Gujarat (294616), Uttarakhand (288087), and J&K (257501).

  • The count of active cases across India on Wednesday saw a net reduction of 127,046, compared with 163,232 on Tuesday. States that have seen the biggest daily net increase in active cases are Tamil Nadu (11333), Assam (1451), Tripura (557), Meghalaya (417), and Manipur (267).
  • With 389,851 new daily recoveries, India’s recovery rate stands at 86.23%, while fatality rate has increased marginally to 1.11%.
  • The Indian states and UTs with the worst case fatality rates at present are Punjab (2.41%), Sikkim (1.81%), and Uttarakhand (1.74%). The rate in as many as 20 is higher than the national average.
  • India’s new daily closed cases stand at 394,380 — 4,529 deaths and 389,851 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 1.15%.
  • India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 1.2%.
  • India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 65.8 days, and for deaths at 43.0 days.
  • Overall, five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Tamil Nadu (33059), Kerala (31337), Karnataka (30309), Maharashtra (28438), and Andhra Pradesh (21320).
  • Among states with more than 25,000 cases, the five with worst recovery rates at present are Uttarakhand (72.49%), Karnataka (73.69%), Himachal Pradesh (77.59%), J&K (78.48%), and Puducherry (78.70%).
  • India on Tuesday conducted 2,008,296 coronavirus tests to take the total count of tests conducted so far in the country to 320,301,177. The test positivity rate recorded was 13.3%.
  • Five states with the highest test positivity rate (TPR) – percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for Covid-19 infection (by cumulative data for tests and cases – are Goa (18.13%), Maharashtra (17.2%), Dadra & Nagar Haveli-Daman & Diu (13.33%), Kerala (12.13%), and Chandigarh (12.07%).
  • Five states with the highest TPR by daily numbers for tests and cases added – are Sikkim (36.03%), Goa (34.84%), Karnataka (32.5%), West Bengal (28.73%), and Andhra Pradesh (23.36%).
  • Among states and UTs with more than 10 million population, five that have carried out the highest number of tests (per million population) are Delhi (983783), J&K (587733), Kerala (508394), Karnataka (415469), and Uttarakhand (384850).
  • The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (5433506), Karnataka (2272374), Kerala (2200706), Tamil Nadu (1664350), and Uttar Pradesh (1637663).
  • Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported 28,438 new cases to take its tally to 5433506. The state has added 380,170 cases in the past 10 days.
  • Karnataka, the third-most-affected state, has reported 30,309 cases to take its tally to 2272374.
  • Kerala, the second-most-affected state by total tally, has added 31,337 cases to take its tally to 2200706.
  • Tamil Nadu has added 33,059 cases to take its tally to 1664350.
  • Uttar Pradesh has added 8,673 cases to take its tally to 1637663.
  • Andhra Pradesh has seen its tally going up by 21,320 to 1475372.
  • Delhi has added 4,482 cases to take its tally to 1402873.
